how do degree a cam?

Ok, I ordered my Lunati 60102 cam today, and have a question of how to degree a cam?
The double roller chain I have only has one set of key slots, do I need a different set up to achieve this?

Another question on valve springs, the builder has Z28 springs(?), dose anyone know what the spring info is on these? I’m thinking of just getting the lunati set (springs, retainers & locks) and be done with guessing.

I can scan the directions from my degree wheel for ya for ya I have in front of me easier than explaining it give me a minute and I edit this post.

As for the springs I usually match tothe cam manufacturer like you stated. I have used the Z28 spring a bunch of times also with GR8 results. I will check the specs to see if they are ok if you would like.

If the cam phasing needs to be shifted a few degrees to get it dead on you'll need an offset bushing. Take a look at this link it has a pic of the bushing.

The z28 springs have been around for a long time. Not sure of their origin, but that really doesn't matter anyway does it? I'd call Lunati/Holley's tech line and ask them if they'll work for that cam. You can then have them checked by a headshop to make sure their not weak. Thanks RJ, thats great. Does this usually require a specific timing chain though?

You can do a decent job of checking and setting up your valve springs using a drill press and typical bathroom scale. Its not a bad idea to do even with new springs you'de be suprised how much variation there can be in a set of springs. This will allow you to shim each spring so everything is dialed in. It is a time consuming task but if your going thru the trouble to degree the cam why not blue print the valve springs too.

I think what you are talking about is the normal cam installed advanced and retarded that some timing sets come with were the crank gear has multiple positions and marks.

Degreeing is most importantly checking to be sure cam specs are spot on.

No, I’m having the cam degreed at the shop, but I just was unclear about the process of setting it in place because there was only one way for the gear to go on. He did mention about a bushing but how good are they?

I see I thought as others that you were doing this. I have ran the bushingsin many engine street and race and they work just fine and the way they are supposed to as long as everything is done correctly IMO.

From the other mentions of your shop and some of there recomendations they sound reputable to me. Laying out the options on other thing but not BSing you that they are needed and such. I think you will be quite happy with the final outcome. Hope I help some anyaway. RJ22

If the bushing are required which I really do not think they will be. You would have to drill the multi position adv/retard cam gear for the bushing anyway, unless you were exactly 4 degrees off.
