off to paint
well I decided to take my truck to get painted. In keeping with the "El Cheepo" theam I took it to Earl Schiebs in San Jose. Now I know what some of you are thinking....but they have painted 3 of my cars, a 1953 Chevy wagon, a 64 Galaxie, and a 92 Accord. All of them have come out REAL good.
The trick is to do your own prep and, remove as much trim . Is it a Show paint job ? No but for less then 1000.00 or in this case 650.00 you get a nice shiny paint job, and a life time warranty against fade, peeling, or dulling. Plus with the money I save I'll be able to lay down some nice pinstriping. I'm sure some of youl will cringe or laugh at this post but hey its "EL CHEEPO"

Re: off to paint
Well, all the prep work is the most important thing...that is the hardest of the whole thing. Laying the paint is not that big of a deal....its the 'canvas' that's important.
I'm sure it will come out fine !!! You don't have top tell me about 'El Cheapo'....10-12 cans of primer works for me !!!! Color ?? John

Re: off to paint
Well I went and looked at my truck,The good news is the paint came out nice !!! The bad news is, and I knew this would happen ,that I decided to go with a dark color and it shows the dings I forgot about, as well as the two bigger dings on the front left bed rail.(DANG IT !!!) oh well it aint a show truck. I couldnt bring her home becuse they left the dome light on and it drained my battery , so she will be home tomorow. I will post pics then.

Re: off to paint
Yeah that tends to happen with dark colors. I want to paint mine a dark blue, but the body work will not be perfect. I'm sure I'll be in the same boat as you. Its definitly not a show truck either!!

Re: off to paint
That's cheap enough I might look into doing the same!
So, if you want to cringe, here is my painting regimen: My main goal is to preservation, not appearance. Each year we go for a 10 day camp trip to a lake (for the last 20 years running, same place). I bring along a few rags, some steel wool, and a box of rustoleum flat white primer. I steel wool off the dirt and flaking paint, dust it off with the rag, and paint it under the trees. It always looks better going home than when we got there. (Though I'm not saying it actually looks good.) Last year I changed it a bit though. I painted the roof top with gloss white marine paint. Sort of like the rocka-a-billy look, except the truck is all white (sort of). |

Re: off to paint
I can't wait to see it! My '62 was painted in the backyard! I have a couple projects going (a '65 and an '83) and my plans were to do an Earl Sheib or a 1 day paint job. That works for me!

Re: off to paint
Thanks, White helps to hide the majority of the imperfecttions, and its much cooler (New Mexico Desert). when I get the short fleet bed on with the custom trim, looking to do a two tone light blue and white.

Re: off to paint
i hear ya about the imperfections. my truck has no major dents but it has alot of little dings, like hail damage or something. so i might go for white too. looks great.
thanks, John

Re: off to paint
You wouldn't believe it, but the Earl Schiebs, Maccos, and 1-Days have some of the best painters. They depend on volume, so their painters are shooting all day long. They get a lot more practice than a painter at a high-end shop does. I had some repair work done on an s-10 at a 1-Day and it came out great. My Dad had is '70 Monte Carlo painted at the same 1-Day and it too came out great. He spent about $1000 at 1-Day to fix the $3k paint job he got at a "professional" shop!
