68 longbed
I looked at a 68 gmc longbed today. It came with I6 and 3 speed but now has a rebuild 350 from an 89 chevy with an edelbrock high rise and a holley 4 barrel. The trans is a rebuilt 700r4 from a 84. It has a straight body with mostly service rust but there seems to be a least one spot of rust on every body panel. Interior is decent. The owner installed a 3/4 ton rear end with 4.10 gears and the front is still 6 lug. It has power steering. It hasn't been started in a year and needs the driveshaft lengthened for the 700r4 so it isn't drivable. I offered the owner 300 and he accepted as long as I get it out of his yard by Sat. I still haven't given him any money, what do you think? It's only 20 miles from my house.
As always I appreciate your help. John Last edited by the_goat; 07-30-2007 at 10:35 PM. Reason: spelling problems |

Re: 68 longbed
Id say the motor and trans is worth that much. Be hard for me to turn a deal down like that.

Re: 68 longbed
I agree, I'll probably just pull what I want and either part out or scrap the rest. This is my first truck and not really what I want but for the price...

Re: 68 longbed
At that price, I say go for it. I'm too far from you so if you would like, I could come check it out with you or give you a hand. I don't know how much help I could be, but the offers on the table.

Re: 68 longbed
I'm just going to buy it. Here is how I see it, I have never done a project like this and figured I could practice before I get something that I would be scared to mess up. I will get pics soon so we can all laugh at what I have gotten myself into.
68 POS, I appreciate the offer LockDoc, I will be sure to do that Thanks for all the replies. |

Re: 68 longbed
at that price, I wouldn't even need to look at it. 3 bills? I'll be there tomorow. that's what I'd be saying.

Re: 68 longbed
Here are a few pics
![]() Here is the worst of the rust ![]() Here is th engine, intake, and carb ![]() After getting it home, cleaning out the bed, cab, and removing the seat it's actually a lot better then I expected. This puts me in a dilemma because I want to fix it up. The bad part is I really want a short bed chevy and I'm pretty convinced I want a caddy motor/tranny. Re: 68 longbed
heck for the money do a quicky spraybomb paint job on it slap a little bondo on the doors and make it a driver , even if it's not a "daily" driver. putter around with it and see if you like it probably get it on the road for a few hundred bucks and have fun doing it.

Geez for that price if you really want a shortbed that bad, make it a short bed. I would have loved to paid 300 bucks for that.

Re: 68 longbed
Either way I HAVE to try and start it so I rebuilt the carb thanks to a post on here on Holley carbs and I'm going to drain the tank, replace the fuel filter, and see if it will start. I case anyone is interested I'll keep you guys posted.

Re: 68 longbed
It's ALIVE! I put some fresh gas in it and it started right up! It sounds great for not having been run in over a year. I am very excited. Now I have to get my drive shaft shortened because of the 700r4. The only time I drove it was of of the trailer when I rolled it into the backyard.
