66 Chevy Vortec V8 5 Spd Buildup
New to the board and wanted to share my 66 project.
66 Chevy Truck Fleetside longbed, small window, 98 Chevy Brakes and spindles (still 6 Lug) on the front. Just took out the factory 3 speed and carb 350. Working on getting the Vortec 350 with NV4500 5 speed transmission in. i have both motors out just need to get the vortec in. Hopefully I will get it running this weekend. Here are a few pics Out with the old. In with the new. I am also going to install a 14bolt semi-floating rear end and the factory gas tank from the 98 as well as the factory a/c. Debating on getting a hypertec programmer or spending the money for EFI Live or not. Any sugesstions? I also have a full set of autometer gauges for the dash along with the billet aluminum gauge cluster. I will post more pics soon. I am welcome to any suggestions. THanks! |

Will the fuel tank fit easily under the bed? Is that where you are going to put it?
Nice looking project you have going.....

Re: 66 Chevy Vortec V8 5 Spd Buildup
The transmission is from a 98 2500 chevy truck.
The gas tank fits in width. however, it is too long. I might chop off the end of it. Don't know just yet. |

Re: 66 Chevy Vortec V8 5 Spd Buildup
On the brakes I took the entire spindle, hub, rotor assembly and used the factory 66 lower ball joint on the factory 66 lower control arm. I had to use the upper ball joint for the upper control arm from the 98 Van. However, the spindle is about 1 inch taller than the factory 66 and the camber is way off. Therefore, you must either build a custom upper control are or a custom lower control arm and adjust the length about 1" Right now I just have the factory arms on until i get the motor in then I will build custom arms. Basically I am using the design off the StrongArms that are used for air bag systems. I will have my upper arms adjustable via threaded rod and right hand threaded heim joint. I am doing the extra work because I think the brakes of the newer trucks are a whole lot better then the 72-88. They are 6 lug too!
