problem with new trans
I jus swaped my th400 to a 700r4....tha 700r4 was rebuilt with heavy duty street/strip ****.... Took it for a little drive today round tha block and it shifts WAY to soon... took it on a main road same thing... any suggestions?? thinking about taking to tha guy that built tomorrow morning

kick down cable adjustment would be what would cause that. or it might have a shift kit. but try making the detent cable longer by adjusting it should help. IM always adjusting mine on a th350 depending on what i want at that time cruise or haul ass

it has a shift kit..... what do you mean by adjusting tha detent cable....are you talking about when your supposed to push tha button in at full throttle... also, tha carb need to be tuned and tha truck need to be timed its been sittin for awhile do you think that has somthing to do with it

I have always heard these 700's can be damaged quikly if you drive too long with the cable out of adjustment because it controls both upshifts and line pressure. I believe mine may have some valve body issues at this point Sometimes I will go to get on the highway and it won't downshift. If I take my foot off the gas and try again, it will. Anyway That link seems like a good source of information. -Jeremy

that would be sweeeeeeeeeeet.... umm i took it down tha street about a week or 2 a go and i got on it a lil bit and i heard some grindin i pulled over asap and dumped 2 more quarts of trans fluid in.. ill be pissed if i spent 1200 and i jus Fed it up

Ive alway been told chevy trans have some give. if you make it home the transmission is fine. or that how the th 350 and th400s were. But yes get that detent cable adjusted right or the 700r4 is toast.

how do you adjust it "right" in tha instrutions it say to push tha button in at full throttle.....i gotta like matbe 10-15 miles down tha road to my trans guy... you think it will be alright.... prbly shouldnt take tha highway?

So i jus talked to my brother he helped me put tha trans in i guess one of tha wires need power that come outta tha trans.... if anyone has a wiring diagram or knows whats goin im all ears im on my way to tha shop to see if i can find tha directions but i doubt it

Hey thanks a million Im sure that this is tha problem hopefuilly aint nothing burned up yet only took her down tha street a few times and one time on a main road for about 10 miles round trip.... kinda anxious now trucks been sittin for so long i wanna go back to tha shop tonight and see if this works but i think im gonna wait till tha morning

umm One other thing i think this normal but.... trans makes a lot of noises in side nothin grinding or squealing or anything like that...just noisy! and cluie

The noise is probably the bands. Harsh bands make noises until broken in. If the transmission is shifting up your okay, but... be carefull. Loosen up the TV cable and check the first two gears. I had the same problem. I had both late shifts and early shifts. Once I adjusted the TV cable it, the tranny shifted fine. A new tranny needs about 500 miles or a good long run to get it hot. Once it's hot the tranny should be fine.

Or a guage on the pump pressure port will show line rise as the cable is pulled even at idle. Your trans expert will have the tools to test this. If the line rise is good, then put softer springs in the govenor. This should raise the shift points. If the shift points are raised, but not enough, grind the weights off or install a vette govenor and try that. The gov springs can be cut off a little too. I build 8-10 various transmissions a week and do this often If that does not work, you need a stiffer spring in the 2-3 shift valve. Start with a spring 1 pound stiffer.......it does not take much to change the shift point. Also check the TV "up" and "down" valves in the valve body. if one or both is stuck that will cause it too. Sometimes a bigger boost valve and spring will throw the calibrations of the valve body way off (if these were installed)" Last edited by gchemist; 08-24-2007 at 08:28 AM. |
