Thinking about buying...
There's a 62 or 63 short wide 1/2 ton 4x4 that has been sitting on the street for a few months now, hasn't moved. Has collector tags, good for a few more years. My questions are:
Was Chevy doing the 4x4s for this generation of trucks, or was it still the NAPCO conversion? How much would you buy it for/offer? I don't have any pictures right yet but it's got the usual fender rot from what I can see driving by. No big dents, good glass. I'm assuming it doesn't run, don't know for sure. What were the engine and trans options for this year? Axles? T-case? I'm a 67-72 guy so this is kinda new to me. It looks like it still has the old bias ply tires on it, still hold air. No major leaks, just rust. It has always caught my eye so I'm putting together a plan to buy it, maybe around the end of winter. Have to finish a few other projects first, mom says... Thanks, Dan I'll get some pics soon, maybe this weekend.

Re: Thinking about buying...
Yes,it would be a factory GM 4wd in that era. They had divorced Rockwell T221s behind SM420 trannys..Dana 44 closed knuckle front, dont know what rear they had,I've never had one.

Re: Thinking about buying...
I have a 61 4x4, mine had 3.91 gears. Try to get pics if you can. From your description I would offer maybe a $1000. But pics would help.

I know chevy made their 4wd in house these years, but I've also found this repair manual.

Re: Thinking about buying...
NAPCO focused on the larger one ton and larger trucks after '60 when GM started offering their own 4wds in 1/2 and 3/4 ton models..Sice GM didn't make a one ton or larger 4wd NAPCO still did conversions for those. They did convert the 10 and 20 series to 4wd but less of them.

Re: Thinking about buying...
I looked at it this morning and it looks like a column shift? Or it's an auto trans? But it does have the divorced T 221 case. Neato. Here it is, the rust is worse than I recalled, it's been a while since I saw it last.
Are these like auto locking hubs or something like that? I didn't get too close, was late for work. It looks tall from my CRX's point of view... I'll try to get more detailed pics Sunday unless it's freezing outside; then I have to stay in the shop and get things done. Darn. Thanks, Dan

Re: Thinking about buying...
It would be a 3spd manual most likely..there was no auto trannys with Rockwells but since it is a divorced t-case,who knows?? If it was original I'd say 3spd manual,if auto I'd say it was swapped in.

Re: Thinking about buying...
The weather might not cooperate this weekend for more checking out... we'll see. I agree about the rust, it's pretty Swiss cheese looking. The house it's in front of looks like it's not maintained regularly, maybe an elderly couple/person. Tall grass and weeds, or they may be 'saving' it for someone else. I hate hearing that especially after I know the thing has been there for some time now. I'm sure some of you have heard "It's a project my son and I are working on." Meanwhile it doesn't move an inch and nothing is being done to it. Humph... I'll keep you posted, maybe the floor is completely gone!

Re: Thinking about buying...
Yea its a 62 according to the grille anyway. The hubs are manual locking, I have the same ones. From the pics about $500 to $700 would be the most I would give for it. Most 4x4's of this year had the sm 420 4 speed, thats what I had in my 61 4x4 it now has a th 350. Anyway good luck with it if you get it.

Re: Thinking about buying...
Hard to find and very desirable, however it will require typical rust repair issues ($$$) common to the era. Those wide 16.5 wheels were a cool aftermarket item made by goodyear, firestone and kelsey hayes in the 60's.

Re: Thinking about buying...
Definitely could be made very cool. Gotta love rust issues. Had to get rid of my 65's cab because the floor was all but gone.

Re: Thinking about buying...
IMO, buy it, and drop a new body & bed on it. It's a K-10 (my avatar) and fairly rare. Only 1,000 made in 65 & 66 (no production numbers before 65)

Re: Thinking about buying...
Not yet, student loan came in and I picked up an 80 K10 for $600 with a blown engine. Turns out it had mismatched heads, one was from a 400 SBC and the other was a 307 head. WTF??? I am almost done installing the late model 305 roller cam in it. I am trying to get rid of that 68 C10 I got from ebay last April... any takers? It's got a 396 and 12 bolt posi... but then I really need to get going on my 67 K10. It's still a bare cab on a frame, dammit. I hate sidetracking! But I will definitely let you folks know if/when I get it. It's still there too, teasing me.
Dan
