Need some help with a backfire problem
Hey Guys,
Got a problem here a need some help. My truck is backfiring and loosing power when under a load. Like going up a hill. And it doesn’t have to be much of a hill. At low speeds on level ground it does fine. It starts good, and doesn’t die when it’s backfiring, but you sure feel like it’s going to. When I first got the truck it had been sitting for a few years. The vacuum advance arm broke and left me stranded after about 100 miles. I put in a new distributor, had the gas tank cleaned out, and ran new fuel lines. Also had a friend rebuild the carb, which was a rebuilt one to begin with. He said he thought it was pretty much a POS but he did the best he could do. He’s a GM mechanic so I think he knows he stuff pretty good. The thing is acting to me like it’s having too much gas dumped in it when under a load and the engine isn’t firing fast enough to keep up. The timing is set a factory specs. The vacuum advance is working, as I can see the arm move when I rev the engine, which also makes it backfire. Is it possible for the timing gears to skip, or be worn out like a chain might do? Maybe I should advance the timing some to make up for the worn condition. Sure hope you guys can give some ideas I need to have this running by Monday morning. Thanks, Tim |

You might try opening up your points a little bit.

I to had points for long time than got smart went to HEI it worth the exta money to switch and less head aches.

I have had similer problems on a couple of different trucks. Mine ended up only being dirty fuel filters.

yea i switched to HEI on mine too. when i first got my 62 which i had intentions to drive, it was bone stock, and ran like crap. carb problems and needed points mainly. so my dad said he would help me out and i had a old HEI dizzy laying around so we traded that as a core for a new HEI dizzy and bought a brand new rochester carb. then the truck ran real good, till ya put it in gear. lol foot to the floor and I MADE IT TO THE END OF THE DRIVEWAY IN LESS THAN 15 SECONDS!!! had no compression, bad rings, you know the drill. well now the 62 is in parts in the shop, the 283 and glide is gone, but i kept the carb and dizzy. then the dizzy went into my 66 and then came back out and the engine is on a stand, and its on a shelf till money allows to be put back together, need cam and lifters, head gaskets, rear seal, all that good stuff. you know ive been through 4 trucks since i was 15 and i still cant drive any of them!!! i hate being addicted to old trucks, but i love it at the same time. bad huh? lol sorry for rambling but i have absolutely nothing else to do at the moment. good luck, hope ya get it going.

Got hei also, took the manual choke off the carb know it takes while to warm up but afterwards purrs like a kitten.

Well, a new carb, and advanced timing made a world of differance. Still has a slight miss you can feel??? Next I think I'll change to HEI. Any ideas where the best place to buy that is?
John, Addicted to old trucks, well I've spent most of my life addicted to old cars in general. Worked coutless hours, and spent $$$ on them. I just keep doing it and don't know why. I guess I'm crazy. Tim |
