Do wiper motors either work or not - or can they get "tired"? Mine are really slow.

Sounds like it is getting tired to me.
I would make sure it is getting ful voltage first though.

Yeah, checking out the voltage at the wiper motor would be a good start. When I bought my 71, wipers were very slow. Replaced the motor, speed of wipers almost doubled. Also, when you have cowl removed, you might want to lube all wiper linkage joints. The 71 chevy service manual gives wiper motor specs (at no load) as 34 rpm on Lo, and 65 rpm on Hi.

Too tired to even go look, but if it means removing the cowl - I'll just get one of my students to ride on the hood with a squeegie.

Yep they get "tired". As the brushes wear, they dont make good contact with the armature. This lowers the amount of amps that can flow through the circuit.

I've got a slow one on my 71 that I've been meaning to replace for about 2 years lol. Every winter I complain about it (colder = slower).
