axle price?

Hey guys, what's the going price for a matching set of axles. 12 bolt and dana 44 with disc brake setup. I've got a guy who wants $500 just for the dana 44 which has new rotors and ball joints. Seems alittle steep. Thanks for any replies.

Re: axle price?

Brand new 8.5" 10 bolts from a CUCK (Army Blazer) can be had for $300 each with a Gov-Lok in the rear. But they come with 3.07 gears...

Personally, wouldn't take less than $500 for my 12 bolt. The thick gears were $200, the bearings were $150 (including axle bearings) brake drums were $65 apiece plus the new pinion yoke. Then there is the labor to set it up and the Eaton Posi(original, re-built with new springs/clutches/plates) Cost you a grand to duplicate it.

$500 is steep for original axles, either end. I wouldn't pay more than $400 for the pair if they are all original with 3.07 gears. I'd give $100-$200 more for 3.73 or 4.10 especially if the original Eaton is in the rear.

I bought a complete 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban with 8.5" 10 bolt front with 4.10 gears and semi-float 14 with 4.10's and a Gov-Lok for $300. Both are stronger than the Dana 44/12 bolt combo. The front mostly because it has the larger u-joints which the 44 could be upgraded to.

Re: axle price?

There is a guy near here that regularly sells front or rear working axles for $100
To have a shop put in new ball joints will cost $400, and needing them is pretty likely.

Re: axle price?

Ball joints are nothing, buy a cheap axle and put them in yourself, you can find d44's in yards for 150 or so and rears for as little as 75 bucks. Maybe Critter will chime in but IIRC he didn't pay more that 200 buck for all new stuff to rebuild his front axle, that doesn't include gears, however, just seals, ball joints, bearings, etc.

Less than that I think. For all the seals, spindle wheel bearings, (no gear and pinion bearings) and axle shaft ujoints was around $125 + tax. I got everything from Orielly's and/or NAPA.

Re: axle price?

'Tread Saver' brand ball joints are about $16 each, but I don't think I'd put one on my truck.
