those that have done the 6 lug rotor swap...

What caliper are you using? I have my swap all planned out but I haven't heard or seen what caliper they are running.

I'll be running the stock chevy 88 and up rotors with a 81 and up 1.25" style spindle to get the right seal and bearings in for the rotors.

I haven't done the swap yet but I'm planning on it. I've done some measuring and comparing and even though the '88 and up rotors will physically fit on the '87 and older spindles, I don't believe you can get a caliper to fit.

According to the thread in the FAQ's here on the board, the '88-'98 or so spindles need to be used with the '88 and up rotors. Then you'll be able to use the calipers from the same vintage spindles and rotors. I would suggest checking out the write up...it has all the info to do the swap.

will i'v looked at the kits online and non of them use ball joints or spindles so there must be a stock rotor that is used. i guess i'll just try and see what works before ordering a kit.

The 6 lug rotor kits that are offered use custom rotors that will work with the '73-'87 spindles and calipers. You can buy just the rotors if you already have the '73-'87 spindles.

i have an 81 front that im using but mine are the LD 1" rotors. (a3 and a6 bearings)I need to check my bearings to see but i think I need the 1.25" spindles in order to run the 88 and up rotors ( a3 and a5 bearing sets)

I believe you're going to have to use the '88-'98 spindles if you're going to use the '88-'98 6 lug rotors

This is an OLD response I got from member dennis brooks about 2 years ago when I asked him about using 71' spindles and late model rotors. i eventually just bought the MGauphey's kit and never attempted to piece the kit together. I don't know if this helps or not but here it is:

"As you know the good thing is there are more than one way to get disc brakes. It depends on how much work you want to do also and condition of existing parts. Since you have a 70 you will be required to change balljoints no matter what 71-91 spindle you use if you retain the 70 a-arms.

Since you have the 71 setup, I would change out the upper and lower a-arms from the 70 to the 71 using the 71 spindles. Unless you ruin the existing balljoints-- then it is a wash. If you have to get new balljoints and depending on the condition of your 70 a-arms bushings and rods - you could stay with the 70 a-arms. Call Oreilly's (check on Rockauro.com first for rotors) and get 88 GMC lightduty 3/4 ton rotors --- these are 6 lugs that use the same bearings A5 inner and A3 outer that the 71 5 lug uses. You can probably re-use the 71 calipers and pads with the 88 GMC 6 lug rotors. Worst case scenario is that you will also use the 88 calipers but the rotor dimensions are so close (71 is 1.25" wide) (88 3/4 ton is 1.28" wide) that I do not believe you will have a problem. Good thing about Oreilly's is you can take them back.

I have 6 lug disc on my 67 and run my flex lines to the rear. You could change to the front like the 71 --move tab, move steel lines -- but if you lay it out right you should be ok in the rear. I can send you some pics if you give me your email.

I also know TX Firefighter has a set of 6 lug rotors he wants to sell probably with bearings and seals -- not sure how much.

The McNaughy kit is a good kit for 6 lugs also.

If you use the 70 steering link then you will need the 71 outer tie rod ends cut from 11/16" RH thread to 5/8" LH hand thread -- I just did a pair for Bighead. I have done 4 sets.

Where are you located?

One more thing -- if you use the 70 a-arms with the 71 spindles then all it takes is a little grinding on the cast stop of the spindle to get the turning radius back.

A-arm rods and bushings are the same from 63-72."

I'm in Corvallis Oregon. I already located the rotors with the proper bearings and seals to work with a HD spindle (a3 and a5) in order to work with a 88 to 98 rotors. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I just don't see spending that much for shipping on a "kit" your basicly paying them to round everything up for you. It's a chevy theres nothing special about, it's all off the shelf parts.

68burb, post and let us know what works on this, i also agree there should be a rotor that should fit from off the shelf. I have a set of 71 spindles that I am putting on a 67 1/2 ton. Would like to stay with the 6 lug so I dont have to change the rear axles.

Using this rotor/caliper set-up, would it fit a stock 15" wheel ?? Probably not, I'm assuming.

I sort of pieced a kit together my self. I F@#%ed up the first time and got the wrong spindles ld 1" rotors. I was pissed when I got the rotors from cpp and the bearings were different. But what I did was get the spindles, calipers, prop valve, booster, mc, and complete steering assembly(box to tierods) from an 8x hd 1.25" rotor truck. Used the calipers for cores on new ones. made all new hard brake lines fro the front. New flex lines, And new balljoints for the 8x truck In my 67 arms. The only triming was to the steering stops on the spindles. Power discs (drilled and sloted rotors) and better steering for around 400.
