Can this 55 handle AC
My new truck has a stock 305 and the PO has stuck an electric fan in front of the radiator for when he says it would get hot... Which leaves me suspect of the radiators condition. Even with a new radiator can I make it happen?

Re: Can this 55 handle AC
i would put the a/c on, and if needed upgrade the efan and set it to come on with the a/c compressor

Re: Can this 55 handle AC
Not sure how your's is set up, but my IROC has dual fans. One was set to come on at 200+ degres, the other came on with A/C. The IROC has an ECM that controls all of the electric. I know there are fan switches you can buy/install to tell the fan to come on at certain temps. The 1st Z/28 I had ('84) was a carbed 305 with A/C with 1 elect. fan. The 305's were designed to run warmer for smog. I like my IROC around 185. GM says 210 is better. What does your's read on a summer day? What thermostat are you running? Clean '55 BTW!

Re: Can this 55 handle AC
I guess what the P O said when it gets hot, does it boil water out of the rad?
I have a Spal puller fan on a full shroud and the temps in So AZ in June are a VERY good test for rad. and A/C and the fan runs all the time in the summer but it keeps the temp in the 190* and stays there. Your truck should handle A/C no problem where you are at! Replace the cap to maybe a 12# and get a good reading at the thermostat outlet with a heat gun and see if that is the true temp. It is possible the rad is in need of rodding and cleaning or maybe a Stewart Components water pump and thermostat. I found them to work the best in the Southwest desert with some H.P. and 10:1 compression. Make the changes one at a time to see if it makes a difference, start with the easiest!!

Re: Can this 55 handle AC
my mustang was overheating, i put a new thermostat in (the other one only had 500 miles in it) and a new radiator cap, problem solved!

Re: Can this 55 handle AC
Thanks for the answers , I looked closer at what this guy had done and the shroud that is there really serves no purpose. The bottom is wide open sooo... it sorta looks good but no real purpose other than safety. After further inspection , he put a large trans cooler in front of the radiator and since it is hard to see why clean it? I know it needs a trans cooler but not that large and where he put it.
I went ahead and ordered a slimline single coil ac from vintage for it and while I'm doing the pulley set up for it I'll fab a shroud for it. Don't getta lot of choice on the radiator size but if it is the original I will replace it. |
