What do you carry to be prepared?

This past weekend I was trying to organize all the stuff I carry around in my Blazer & at least get it all tied down. I like to be prepared for a possible breakdown or spur-of-the-moment offroad adventure, so have a couple of big ammo boxes full of junk: recovery gear (straps, shackles, hooks, gloves), jumper cables, tool kit & big zip ties, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, toilet paper , jacket & blanket (it gets cool some late nights with no top), spot light, big tarp (if get caught in big rain), qt of oil... What's some of the stuff you don't leave without?

I was thinking it but couldn't bring myself to say it

How about a high reach bumper jack, seen battery impact guns on the trail

My favorite trail tool is an impact gun.
I always carry it, four extra batteries and a 12V charger.

Big/heavy to carry along true but priceless when you need it.

Re: What do you carry to be prepared?

Don't forget extra belts, cheap and don't hardly take up any space. Don't know if anyone said it or not but I usually carry an old antifreeze container with water in it. Hell throw in one of those cheap plastic fuel filters too.

Well, i've never been wheeling in my Blazer, but i would carry these things in my Jeep: tow straps, cell phone, tool kit,hi-lift jack, flashlight,Glock 19 and two magazines. This combo is perfect. Mario

Re: What do you carry to be prepared?

Geez you guys act like people your in an old western film in the middle of a shoot out or something. I don't carry a gun unless i'm out camping or what have ya. If i'm out driving around some old creek bed and someone runs up on me with a gun and wants the blazer, it's there's. I'm not a tiny person so i'm not giving it up unless they do have a gun, if they can fight me bare handed for it and win, good for them. More than likely I wouldn't have time to reach for the gun anyways. Then again I never go wheeling far from home and I really don't feel in danger when I go to the places I do go to but like I said if by some remote chance someone has a gun out there when i'm there and they want my truck, by all means take it. Again, if i'm gone for awhile and far from home (pretty much the only time is when i'm camping) I do carry a firearm.

If you`re broke down or stuck, then all you can do is argue with the thief over who gets the Blazer. No point in shooting each other over a Blazer that ain`t going anywhere.

Was kinda surprised to see a firearm so high on the "must have" list but I also on occasion have had the need to carry one.

Years ago while moving everything I had to my name in a 27ft U-Haul truck pulling my 69 RoadRunner, three guys in a truck stalked us for quite a while running down the interstate.
They came up from behind us several times, we figured out they were hitting the rest areas and drinking, then catching back up.
The last time they hung out by us too long, their attitudes had 'noticeably' changed, it was clear they were waiting for us to exit or pull off for fuel.
It was kinda funny when I showed them the 44mag I was carrying, didn't point it at them, just showed it to em but they did get the point.
Final time we saw them right there.

Sorry for the Hi-jack.

Re: What do you carry to be prepared?

Lots of good input. Depends on where you do your tooley hopin at. Most of my life has been in desert or mountains too far to walk for any help. So in addition to what others carry, I always had at least a 5 gal. jug of drinkable water (for us or truck) A snake bite kit & plenty of bubble gum in the glove box. You'de be surprised how good bubble gum will work on a hole punched in gas tank. I know I'm going to get feedback on the snake kit. But when you're 3 or 4 hrs. from anything. It's better than nothing. Also a good come-a-long, chain & tow strap has helped me out. So has an army folding shovel. Along with some tire cords & monkey glue, and 12 V. compressor. You can have more than one flat on an outing. Been their, done that. If you're cammed, I always had an extra set of plugs. Chugging around the mountains will foul plugs easy. Also a good first aid kit. And by far the most important thing to take with you is common sense. Haven't got enought fingers and toes to count the people I've helped out that got into trouble by doing something stupid.

Re: What do you carry to be prepared?

I found having a bunch of buddies along the most helpful things I could bring along. Maybe that should go without saying, but never go four wheeling by yourself. Buddies always make it more fun and if something happens, it is a lot easier to deal with then by yourself. I know a few of the clubs around here have a person carry a portable welder as part of the gear. I also carried extra parts like U-joints, fan belts, distributor cap, spark plug wires and such when I was out playing. As far as firearms go, we always took them along to plink with, but anymore around here, it might be more a matter of protection. It is fairly common to find an illegal drug crop planted and the "owners" don't care about your Blazer as much as their crop. Of course, the best thing to if you find a crop is to GPS where is it is and get out of there !!!! The crops are often booby trapped, so it is always better to just call in law enforcement and let them deal with it.

Re: What do you carry to be prepared?

I recently put a trick little locking ATV box in the back of my rig to hold all my shat. Its on sliders so I can pull it out to the end of the open tailgate. When its pushed in its fixed, lockable and "roll-over" proof.

I carry all the same things everyone has mentioned plus a small scissor jack, heavy duty 12v air compressor AND a piece of old carpet to lie on if it breaks-down in the mud or snow.

Re: What do you carry to be prepared?

Some good ideas here. Cool idea for a box Johnnywagon.
As far as a firearm, I usually carry a .22 pistol. A little bit for the protection but mainly for shooting snakes. We have a pretty good skin collection on the shop wall (I'll take a pic this weekend & post Monday...if anybody cares)

A creek where I usually go has a little "lab" I guess that's off in the bushes. I see some little punks going in and out of it every now and then but I just stay away and nothing happens. My dad used to be a police officer around that area and said they all kinds of drug problems from that little area and said it was booby trapped like crazy.
