Low $ shroud......don't laugh!!!!
With todays financial crisis, my budget for the truck has been virtually eliminated so I've been looking for some creative ways to save some money. With that in mind I came up with a low budget, low tech fan shroud. This is what I came up with. It's two 17x11 baking sheets I got from Walmart for $10. I cut off one side of each one, traced and cut out the hole for the electric fan and bolted the halves together. I then bolted the fan over the hole and used plastic ties to secure it to the radiator. It works good considering what it's are made of and there is plenty of clearance. I know I'll more than likely replace the radiator & get another shroud eventually, but for now I'll use this setup! Stop laughing!!

Robert:
That looks better than most factory made shrouds. Don't tell anyone what you made it from and they'll think you paid big bucks for it. "Way to go Buddy!"

That's ingenious. But how come ya didn't go for super-savings and raid your wife's kitchen? "Honey I have no idea where you could have put your cookie sheets"

Re: Low $ shroud......don't laugh!!!!
You may want to add some 2 X 2 releif holes in the corners to let the ram air flow out at highway speeds. Looks like it will work just fine!!

Re: Low $ shroud......don't laugh!!!!
nice! i did this earlier this year on my 51 Buick... if you dont mind ill post up how i did it...
alright, i got 2 Stainless Steel pans from the kitchen not exactly the same but used wisely nobody will know. so let me show you what i have done. first pic is the steam table pan, this one is deeper while the other was not so much: so i cut out about 1.75" of depth and one long side to flatten off the other side: here is what is left of the pan after cutting the section for the shroud, this i am using to extend the shroud surface in all directions, simply sectioning it but backwards: now you can see a mock up on the rad and how the above missing piece is used to extend the surface area: taped up the whole thing with some cardboard so i could pull it out from the rad and locate the fan. i used a push pin and string to make the circle which i later used striping tape to mark. all the parts are layed out with the fan possitioned in the center: ps i do not have a means to weld SS so i have to design without welds. top view without fan: here is the mock up pic (crappy pic i know): got the metal i will use for the sides and made / mocked up the barrel. think it needs a little rubber cause the barrel doesnt sit completely flush against the cut circle, from the pic it looks perfect but in person it isnt, its close but not perfect. i think im about done! the top side is the nicer part the bottom has some dings from the original pans, i think it looks great, i bent the two side L mounts and riveted them on so you dont see the conection: |

Re: Low $ shroud......don't laugh!!!!
here you can see the small rubber vacuum hose that i slit, it really helped finish the edges:
the back side so you can see the rubber hose and how little it will obstruct if any the airflow: what do you think? |

Hey, mobileortho, you're on Classic Parts forum. I saw this several days ago, and I thought it looked good. Nothing wrong with low budget ingenuity.
