any opinions on trannies to go with?
so, here i sit ... i've got a '68 c10 ... starts up, runs, but doesn't drive anywhere, i got it with the transmission disconnected and missing all of the linkages ... so ... here's where i need a little help ...
take out the saginaw 3spd column shift i have in my new '67 and put it in to get it running ... put in the th350 i have lying around and play with driveshafts get a th400 to put in it which would have been a stock tranny ... i'm not as familiar with these transmissions OR trucks ... i know what some of ya'll suggest, i just need to get it running and moving with the little dinky 250 motor in it to get it to the shop to get the body work done ... i've got a 350 to rebuild for it, and i'm still deciding on whether to rebuild the NV4500 i got and do the adaption for it, or just get a 4spd ... for the time being, any suggestions???

Go with the 3 spd. for now. That's what it had originally right? And you won't have to mess with an auto conversion. That 250 is a darn good motor and works well with that 3 spd. in my opinion.

Re: any opinions on trannies to go with?
I guess it depends on your engine.
behind a 350, I liked my SM465 more than the TH350. Temporarily, I'd put in the turbo hydro 350, be content, and rebuild your NV4500. That's what I was doing, but after buying a nice dual friction clutch and SFI billet pressure plate for the 4500 swap, I decided to go with a 4L80E. Darn extra parts

Get a 90's NV4500 from a 2500/3500 truck. Great 5-speed!

Re: any opinions on trannies to go with?
i have one, but i was kinda planning on putting it in my '78 ... but whatever temporarily gets this beast moving, is going to have to be finnagled with again to go with the 350 ... the motor isn't going to get built until next winter ... so i'm going to spend a full year running what's left of the 250 in it, with one of those transmission options ...

Re: any opinions on trannies to go with?
I would DEFINATELY use the 4500 in the K10 450.
*edit, depends on 2wd or 4wd NV4500, but even with 2wd, I'd divorce the transfer case in a '78. Should be able to trade your married for a divorced. The 4500 is probably overkill for the C-10. So, I'd still put in the TH350, and use a cable linkage on the hump. 1. It's easy enough to patch up a hump 2. The th350 is plenty of tranny for the truck 3. The th350 cable shifter can be used in anything (except the civic ), so it's not a waste of money 4. I said so

Re: any opinions on trannies to go with?
the 68 is 2wd, 78 is 4wd ... nv4500 is a 4wd tranny ... th350 came out of a car, 2wd ... seems logical to me what to go with, EXCEPT, the whole driveshaft rearrangement ... then when i do put the 350 motor in it i'm building, i plan to find a 4spd tranny to put with it, so i'd be re-doing the whole drivetrain, again ...
i guess, what's going to be the most cost effective in the long run, but still give me a truck that'll drive for the first year alright, is what i'm kinda searching for an answer on ...

This link may help with lengths and yoke arrangements of popular trannies...

Re: any opinions on trannies to go with?
The TH350, should be the same length as a 3 speed with a bellhousing, so drive shaft should work. There were different tailshafts on the TH350, depending on what is was used in. The TH350 that would swap should be about 28 1/2 inches long IIRC. But you still have to deal with the manual crossmember that attaches to the bellhousing. That crossmember may have to come out depending on what tranny and engine position you will do in the future.
