Wrong year bed!
Thanks for this guys!
I removed the bed last Sunday and realized the entire bed is the wrong year. Which years had the narrower frame rails? I might be looking for a swap.. or just leave it??? Pro's - Cons?

Re: Wrong year bed!
If your fab skills are decent, you could move the mount or make new ones. The other option is getting a new rear cross sill......maybe more work, but if that one is shot it mite be better. I think a bed mite be hard to find.

Re: Wrong year bed!
I don't have a picture, but I tack welded a cross brace in place across the back of the frame. Didn't have time to finish the weld. But in any event, those mounting points sit on the cross brace now and can be mounted to it.

What the heck was there before? Since you said you removed the bed. Was the bed hoping up and down on bumps.

Funny, I never noticed that NONE the mounts lined up. Guess because I just had it sitting on the frame. is this a later year bed? I am guessing the new sills for correct year are a direct replacement?

Re: Wrong year bed!
Yep your right Joe!
Daddy Mack Joe is spot on, bedsides, front panel, tailgate, wheel tubs all will work. crossmembers and rear sill are the only difference. I know too as I picked up a 63 bed and then found all the cross members etc off ebay. or you can purchase the repop stuff. if your sides front and tailgate are good hang on to them. It is tough to find good OEM stuff.

Re: Wrong year bed!
Which welds are you referring to? Lower rear bed corners to the rear sill?

Re: Wrong year bed!
They are shallow welds and easy to cut.

Re: Wrong year bed!
Well I wouldn't say it does it. It did do it and my arm felt like it was going to fall off. I just could not get anything in the gap and it drove me bonkers.

Re: Wrong year bed!
Yeah, but when I tried a saw zaw it was hoping all over the place and since the cut is only 1/2 inch or so deep I had an issue guiding it and when I did get it to fit it was trying to cut to deep into the 90degree bend beyond the lower support and you have to hold it tight and at an angle forward to keep from cutting the bed side.
All I know is if anybody can do it with a Saw Zaw they are more or a man than I'll ever be. Well at Saw Zawing hahahahah. Last edited by kizer; 02-25-2009 at 03:13 PM. |
