I assume this is probably the crank seal that's leaking. You're right, pull the timing gear cover to replace the seal and put a redi-sleeve on the crank.

I dont think it is the seal because i did replace it. the leak is where the oil pan cups the timing chain cover. there is a U shaped gasket in there but in order to replace it do I have to jerk the oil pan???

You might as well pull the pan, and put in a Fel Pro 1 piece oil pan gasket. You can get them at most any auto parts store. Then you won't have to invest in another pan gasket...ever. They're reusable if you'd ever have to pull the pan again, and they come with all new hardware. That's just my recommendation though, I've never seen a cork pan gasket with those rubber ends seal as easily as the Fel Pro 1 piece.

I second 68 Stepside's recommendation of the Fel-Pro gasket. My truck's timing cover gasket (on GM crate engine) is dripping oil on the garage floor as I write this! I've used the Fel-Pro one piece gasket on a couple of other engines, without problems. I just need to get my ducks in a row and get the dirty business done.

I replaced that very gasket ( U-shaped one) many years ago. Had to pull the fan, water pump, harmonic balancer and timing chain cover and just unbolt oil pan very carefully w/ out messing up the cork. Then work the gasket in along with silicon gasket sealer. 7 years and still holding. I'm kicking myself now, it was a perfect opportunity to replace the timing chain and gear, but money was an issue at the time.
