305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
OK BB V-6 fans, here is my project for this spring. My current set-up in my GMC is the original 305A with a one barrel 1907 Holley. My plan is to take a two barrel manifold (got one this last weekend) and put a y-manifold made for early F*rd flatheads on it and then stick two Strombergs on top of that. I don't think anyone has done this yet to these V-6's, so needless to say I am excited/ambitious to complete this before the car shows this summer.
Here is my current set-up: Here is the new manifold (notice I shaved off all numbers and castings for a smoother look) , y-manifold, adapter and Strombergs: The y-manifold and adapter are on their way, but I going to have to save up for the Strombergs because they are a little pricey. What do you guys think?

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Yeah, I believe it is going to be too tall, so I am going to have to get another hood to cut up. I definitely can't cut up the original hood. I want another 60-61 hood though. I'm not sure if I am going to cut one big hole for both carbs or individual holes. I'll probably go with velocity stacks either way and it should look pretty sick sticking out of the hood!

Speedway makes a lower profile dual mount and it will clear the hood. Part # 135-2001

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
It actually has a better flow than the raised adapter , The flow has better angles into the manifold and dosn't colide the fuel patern as badly, I tried one of each on a mod rod of mine and found the performance and driveability was better with the low adapter, if you are looking for more performancee I would also consider the demon 98s as they perform more like a 250 cfm carb than the original 98s which are more like 150cfm, and have countless problems with leaks from every oraface, even with new bases, Trust me , I know! lol

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
I believe you, unfortunately I already bought the y-manifold. As for the Demon I saw those and considered them because they are 50 bucks cheaper than the new Strombergs but I am sticking with the theme of pre '63 parts on her...

check this site out
http://thunderv12.com/ these guys build a hot rod vversion of the gmc V12 If you are not familliar with them, the v 12's used a bunch of the same parts as the v6. they used 2 intakes, and 4 heads some of the parts that these guys make should probably interchange for hot rodding your v6. 4bbl intake heads, rods? |

That looks like a killer set-up to me! I can barely get 1 carb to work, so I will not be any help........take some pics when you get going with that. I'll enjoy spectating.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
No I haven't. That link above that jonzcustonshop posted had a section that says Parts, and then it goes on to say that they don't sell parts, but it also says that they have the flanges already made up for the V-6's and are available for purchase. Go figure that one out.
I'm planning on just making my own, maybe I might call that company and see how much they want for the flanges. I know Summit and other suppliers have kits you can buy for making up the piping....

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
OK, just talked to Bob Walker at ThunderV-12.com and he's charging $45 per exhaust flange set plus freight. I was gonna make my own flanges but I may buy them just to support the business and hopefullly they'll end up making more parts for the V-6's!!
Also, Bob says they make their own bellhousing adapters to bolt up a modern Chevy transmission. We might be able to adapt that ignition coil pack to our engines if any of you guys are interested in that. We have to figure out if the balancer on the V-12 is the same as our V-6's for the crank trigger....Good stuff. Thanks again to jonzcustomshop for the link. You Rock!!

Well I still haven't received my manifold and adapter yet, this is killing me!
I am headed home this weekend finally to start up the GMC and maybe go for a nice drive. I'll take some updated pics too!

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
I definitely will.
Have any of you guys ever set-up dual carbs? This will be my first attempt at it. I'm pretty sure they get a straight linkage so the throttle plates open at the same time but I've never actually seen a dual carb set-up up close. Probably need some help here.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
A word of warning on the V6. They will self-destruct if operated at high RPM for extended periods. To make one run fast will take a lot of crank balancing. A good port job will help, too. And if you're going to go to that much work I would look for a 351E, it's a far better engine to start with.
The V6 is a good, but slow, engine. The block has a nickel content a little lower than the caddy so they will run 200,000 miles on a set of rings. They also put out gobs of torque, and will pull like the devil all day and all night. But if you rev one high, you will be left with a hand full of block on the blacktop.
