Cowl Cold Air Intake - Factory Style Air Cleaner
I did a few searches here, but did not find it...I thought I had read a post awhile back from someone who used the removeable cowl access panel (passenger side firewall above the heater unit) for a cold air intake with ducting to a factory-style snorkel air cleaner housing. Does anyone have the link or photos to that modification? I think a snorkel-type air cleaner housing was used in this modification.

Re: Cowl Cold Air Intake - Factory Style Air Cleaner
I've seen it done several times for Jeeps, but I don't have anything for these old rigs.

I think it might have been in alans classics' build thread, he was thinking of doing it, and several people commented on it.

I haven't seen what you're looking for, but I know what you're talking about. I don't think it would be too difficult to do. I guess it depends on your fab skills and eguipment.

Re: Cowl Cold Air Intake - Factory Style Air Cleaner
that would be pretty cool.
I remember one guy on here had one of those expensive polished aluminum do-it-yourself CAI kits, but IIRC he had them aimed towards the snorkels on the front of the hood. |

Re: Cowl Cold Air Intake - Factory Style Air Cleaner
That would be so cool (no pun intended) and good for a few HP.
The cowl through firewall fresh air intake is a very rare option on some early Camaro Z28's also (I have only seen one) If you can TIG or have access to someone that can, it easy to modify about any air cleaner and make this work with some large diameter flex hose that you flatten into an oval. I have modified air cleaners/relocated snorkels using MIG but it is a lot more work due to thinness of material and a lot of grinding of your welds. If you do it, post pics please.

Re: Cowl Cold Air Intake - Factory Style Air Cleaner
We discussed it a little bit on page 16 of my build. I still haven't decided yet. Once I get to that point I'll give it more thought. It would be cool if done right. I don't know what right is yet.

Re: Cowl Cold Air Intake - Factory Style Air Cleaner
Thanks...yeah, I just fabbed a short piece of 2 1/2" x 6" oval tubing as an intake mouth piece for a friend. It was while I was doing more work to fill in the holes on my firewall on Sunday I thought the shape of the oval tubing would fit just right...I just need to find an air cleaner housing that I can hack up.

Re: Cowl Cold Air Intake - Factory Style Air Cleaner
I wonder if you could fab up something so its reversed some? Either that or you are more or less creating something from scratch.

Re: Cowl Cold Air Intake - Factory Style Air Cleaner
I'll just fabricate something from scratch...it's a suitable air filter housing that has me on the hunt, now.

Just remember this. Note: The custom plenum is recommended for small displacement engines (less than 200 C.I.) or low revving V6-V8 engines. If the engine requires more than 45 sq. in. of filter area then the plenum should not be used because the carburetor would have to be re-jetted and a loss of high R.P.M. power will be the result. |
