Differences between chevy and gmc

Hello, first post, maybe already anwsered in early post. I have found a 1950 gmc pickup in unbelievable condition. I prefer the chevy front ends over the gmc grilles. Are the cabs and fenders the same??? I know that the hoods and grilles are different. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

brian

Re: Differences between chevy and gmc

Having bought a '47 chev, and a '52 GMC... I like the chev's better as well. I just spent the last week picking the best sheetmetal from both and making a single truck, then towing it 600 miles to the coast.

I've compared the fenders (inner and outers) side by side and overtop each other... and they are exactly the same with the exception of the front holes just below the headlight. The big difference is, of course, the hood and grill, the tin just infront of the rad, the rad support and the tin under the grills. Other than that and any proprietary markings, pretty damn much the same, and I've already mixed and matched the parts.

Hope this helps,
Ted.

Funny, I have a 51 Chevy, but prefer the GMC front end since they are a little less common. Either way, it all bolts on and off easily enough. And you can't go wrong with an AD no matter which version!

Re: Differences between chevy and gmc

GMC's offered different motors. I'm not positive on all years, but in 1951-53 GMC's came with 228, 248, or even 270 ci 6cyl's where Chevy had the 216 or 235. Also, GMC came out with the hydramatic auto trans in 53, Chevy didn't until 54.

I've heard that there were very very slight frame length differences between the GMC's and Chevy's but I haven't seen anything to support that...

Re: Differences between chevy and gmc

I dont have any plans for the grille and the hood. I am picking up the truck this weekend. Honestly, really have not given much attention to the grille since I wont be using it. The hood is dented in pretty good. From what I remember it is in pretty good shape. I will post some pix once this weekend.

Re: Differences between chevy and gmc

Only difference I've noticed with the guages is by the year, the speedo range was increased in the later years of the series, had nothing to do with the body type.

Cheers,
Ted.

Re: Differences between chevy and gmc

Based upon what I have seen advertised, GMC had white background and burgundy numerals. Chevy was black background and white numerals.

These are from eBay and are not my parts, nor do I know the seller.

Re: Differences between chevy and gmc

The front crossmenber that the radiator support sits on is different on the GMC and Chevrolet frames and I think that is the big difference in the frames. I think if you use the core support things should fit ok but I haven't tried it *yet*. They are different across the top though.
y
This has caused my brain to jumpstart as I have a GMC frame set aside to use for the rebuild of my truck and instead of swapping front crossmembers I may be able to modify the top of the GMC core support to the Chev style. A lot less work should be invloved in that.
