Price of trucks going up?
Is it just me, or is it just a regional thing, but has anyone else noticed the price of "our" trucks seems to be going up? I thought with this recession the market would be flooded with cheap trucks as people try to unload their toys and project vehicles for quick cash. Instead, I seem to see the opposite happening. I do see more trucks for sale, but trucks that used to be $1000 are now $2500, non-running rust buckets are being advertised over $1000, etc. etc. What's up with this?

Re: Price of trucks going up?
The market's flooded here, you can buy a nice driver, car or truck for $800 all day long, which is strange because $800 doesn't go far at all anymore in the way of bills or food.
It's getting worse too, the goverment is doing a real good job of destroying the middle class here, I see third world conditions with tent cities coming soon. |

Re: Price of trucks going up?
Here we have people who sell rust for $5k and people who sell no rust for $500. You have to search CL constantly so you can get deals.

Re: Price of trucks going up?
I can find a nice truck for $4000. If you want big block or A/C keep adding. 4WD are stupid expensive because people have modded them and are looking to get money back. Rust and needs repair $3-800, decent body needs repair $5-18--, running but rusty $750-2500, nice reapint needs minor repair only $2500-3500, nice clean ready to drive with repaint and wheels $4000.

Re: Price of trucks going up?
Yeah I've been looking at all the Michigan Craigslist sites, and even though I'm 10 minutes from the border, it seems like everything over on the Michigan side is 1/3 the price of what it would be over here in Canada. Even adding 25% for the exchange rate and import taxes and everything, trucks are STILL much cheaper across the border. I don't get it. I'd go across the border to get a truck but I have no car trailer at the minute and no truck to pull it anyway.

I'm with you Fraser Beatty, trucks in this area are over priced. People think they are gold.

Price of trucks going up?
Unfortunately, that's part of the mentality with some sellers who are out of touch with the market... "if it's old, it's gold."
I purchased my '79 C-10 about 3 years ago. I'll admit it... I practically stole the thing. But, I was also in the right place at the right time. However, since that time, I have seen prices of 73-80 trucks double in price... especially nice ones, at least in our area. I also feel it's because we live in the rust belt. Clean trucks of that vintage are getting much harder to find. Here in New England, 4x4's go for a premium. It's just the way it is. The positive flip side, however, not many people want 2wd's... unless it's pre-1981. Since the selection of pre-73 trucks has become much thinner, buyers go to the next era... in this case, 73-80. It's been this way with cars that were built before 1975 for years. IMO, it won't be too long before you'll see a really nice stock 73-87 V-8 truck, regardless of bed length go for $30K... more if it's modified. |

Re: Price of trucks going up?
Most vehicles go through a cycle. The depreciate until they are about 20 to 30 years old then start going back up. Look at the '80's F and G bodies. The cars from the '60s are doing the same thing and are correcting again. Our trucks are going to go up slow, I think, because GM used a design that was changed relatively little for 20 years as opposed to the '67-'72 trucks short run.

Re: Price of trucks going up?
So it's not just me lol. Pefect example, I was cruisin the local online classifieds tonight, came across one of our trucks. Knew from the start I wasn't goin to buy it, called to find out the details anyway. 84 1/2 ton 2WD LWB. Original 305 engine with 200 000+ kms, 700R4 tranny, no work done to either since new according to current owner. Guy told me it would need floors, rockers, and cab corners for sure. Box, doors, and fenders looked dicey in the classified pics. Get this. Asking price was $3000 (and that's in Canadian funds)!!!!! Asked the guy if he was flexible, said he might drop to $2700 cash. I just about laughed.
BTW this is in London, Ontario, Canada, about 1 hour from the US border at Port Huron, Michigan, where the same truck would be no more than $600-$700 from what I have seen.

Re: Price of trucks going up?
All of you are exactly right . Itravel thrughout central & southside Va. on my job . I stopped at a used car lot in southern VA. What caught my eye & the reason Istopped was the slection of cars & trucks he had . He specializes in vintage- classic stuff which he said he gets mostly now from people who have to sell their toys to pay their bills due to the economic conditions . One of his was a 72 swb super cheyenne for 14.500. Right beside it was a 86 swb -totally stock totally rust free silverado for 4900.00 . the72 was very special -lowered a little -frame off restoration -but he went on to tell me that the squares were getting harder to find ( good ones ) & the prices are definitely increasing . the 86 was a solid body truck & had a cover over the bed & the owner admitted that the squares are definitely becoming more & more desirable to street rod up . As we all know too many wwre made in these years for them to be as valuable as the 67-72's . I personally would not pay 3 times more for a 67-72 than a 73-87 assuming all were in the same condition . take advantage of the price of our teucks now .-for some day > you know what i mean.

Re: Price of trucks going up?
I went back just now, couldn't find the exact ad I was refering to in order to post the link to it. Found some more though. Check out those prices! I understand you can ASK whatever you want for a vehicle, but I really wonder if some of these trucks will ever sell...Remember these are Canadian prices, add about 15% to the asking price to cover the exchange rate.

Re: Price of trucks going up?
Have to agree with SCOTI, the Dallas CL has 67-72 and 73-80 model trucks in very good shape and nice options lists going for about $600-$1,000 almost daily. In the last three months I have seen a 69 1/2 ton CST factory BB, A 70 1/2 ton CST factory BB both for $800 obo each. I also saw a 77 1/2 ton factory big block as well for $500. There was also a 70 1/2 ton with 60k original miles that looked like it was five years old for sale for $600 because the people inherited it from their grandpa and couldnt get it to start. Sounded to me like all it needed was some points. Heck just this past monday there was a 67 1/2 ton that was cherry for $650 obo. It was sold before I could call on it though. Trust me when I say Dallas CL is Awesome!!
