what to do about trans???

OK I have a 85 short step 502/th400/411s I bought it in march with a bad trans. I went and bought a new trans put it in and 2000 miles later i cracked the case well the bell from about 4 inches from the starter by the cover up and around. Its got a warranty so not to mad about it but should i just slam a new one in it or should i try something new??

Re: what to do about trans???

I think you need to determine why the trans cracked before you put in another one. Otherwise it could happen again.

Re: what to do about trans???

well my trany guy seems to think there was a crack in the case. and he was making fun of me because i had to get the reman and not rebuild the one that came out of the truck. All looks good under the truck so i have to think there was a hair line crack that got missed by me and the factory.

Re: what to do about trans???

An ultra bell/scatter shield is an excellent piece of preventative hardware, ask Don Garlits. You are real lucky that thing didn't come apart in a bad way!! You can have the guts of the th400 w/cracked bell put into another case, won't be free, but should be cheaper than buying a complete new 400??

Re: what to do about trans???

OK, but i would have the pinion angle checked and make sure the driveshaft yoke has ample 'slide in' distance. i found mine had this tranny history after i broke the case. Due to PO being a butcher. I never got over it due to the work now involved. good luck. crossy

Re: what to do about trans???

hotrodders and racers have been using torque straps to keep an engine in place and prevent failures since b4 WW2

Crossy all that is good I checked it when i got it because of the PO going thought 3 transmissions in 10k miles(he was putting bolt on yoke th400s in it with a one piece drive shaft) Thats why i think there was a hair line crack in it

Re: what to do about trans???

I had th400 do the same thing You could see where it had been cracked for a long time and the the fresh break.... Might just be a th400 thing... or maybe one to many reverse to drive under full throttle i dont know... a friend off mine that worked in a tranny shop said he had seen it before in hardcore 4X4s a few times... I dont think its anything to worry about.... just one of those things
