229 V6 Timing! Help!!
I have a 1981 229 V6 and I believe the timing is off. I have it set currently at 6 degrees btdc and in second gear it does not have much power! I started at 0 degrees tdc and worked my way up to 6 btdc trying to get the power up, but have had only minor improvements. All I need to know is where to set the timing, as it idles perfect and goes through the rest of the range pretty good until 45-65 mph where again it does have problems with power! Great oil pressure and great water temp. New Thermostat and full tuneup and still having issues! Someone please help!

Re: 229 V6 Timing! Help!!
im told if you look really hard on the intake manifold they have a notation what the timing is for the motor.... ( according to a friend who is here having dinner who is a mechanic) we are thinking its 8BTDC

Re: 229 V6 Timing! Help!!
Thank's yeah the engine has been rebuilt, but the guy who did the job although is a master mechanic is not to good with the paint dept. He painted over the numbers and degree marks on the tab. So im just guessing on the marks, but im close! He also painted the intake as well with a silver colored high temp paint, so although I can see the piston and fireing order I cannot see much else. Went to look at a haynes manual on my engine and it too says 6 btdc but I guess it is gonna have to be tinkered with until I get it close to where 6 btdc is supposed to be on the degree tab! Like I said engine is fresh but it just dont look to swift on the outside lol. Guess the search goes on for 6 or 8 Btdc!!
