Question 3 Speed trans. question

I currently have a 64 with a 3 speed on the column. It has a non synchro 1st gear. The 1st reverse slider has a tooth broke off. I have been given a Saginaw 3 speed with a main case no. GM 48 463011 and a side cover GM 41 3952645. I was wondering if anybody has been able to swap the non synchro gear cluster out for a full synchro or will the transmission just swap out?

Thanks,

B.

Re: 3 Speed trans. question

If you're like me, you'll end up getting real good at double clutching and slipping that dude into first!

Re: 3 Speed trans. question

The real problem is that when I start off in 1st it has a bad popping sound. It also does it in reverse. My Grandfather never did double clutch, he would "grind 'em 'til he found 'em" On another note, does anybody know where to find replacement gears. I would be willing to just change the slider gear out.

Thanks,

B.
P.S. The truck was originally bought in Jasonville, IN.

Re: 3 Speed trans. question

The guy before me converted mine to a "Made in China" Hurst Shifter. It is nearly impossible to find Reverse or 1st. I just drive in 2nd and 3rd. Eventually I will burn up the clutch but I haven't had a chance to get under there yet (only had it a week).

My Dads' 65 has an original 3 spd and when I had to replace the clutch I was going to swap it for a '77 model syncro 3 spd from a truck. I sat them side by side and the shifter attachments were set up differently. I didn't see a quick, easy way to swap the 2 so I just reinstalled the non-syncro tranny. Could've swapped it to a floor shift but he wanted to keep it on the column (I don't blame him either).
My 64 sb had a syncro 3 spd with the floor shift...worked great.

As for the numbers or swapping the internals, I'm clueless.

Hope my ramblings help a little, anyway...

Chief , If that means you are going to be adding a T5 or an automatic, you better be doing a write up with lots of pics!

Re: 3 Speed trans. question

I was going with the 700R4, but just couldn't part with the fun of a clutch just yet.

I just installed a Muncie 4-speed in it. You can see it in the thread.

Re: 3 Speed trans. question

Driving to work on Wednesday my Hurst "Made In China" Indy Shifter came apart, so I drove all the way in 1st gear. HAHA. Only cost me $.31 to fix it. The freakin nut came off the bolt that holds it to the mounting plate. Don't know how to adjust the 1st/R "bar".
