I think my son told me once that there are numbers stamped on the chunk that you can see when you take the cover off.
I am sure some one else will chime in. Danny

Re: can you tell the gear ratio by the number of teeth on the ring gear?
if the ring gear has 43 and the pinion is 16 then - 43 divided by 16 = 2.69, and 43 divided by 10 = 4.3. i have to admit that these are some odd numbers. the ring gear is the big one that is ring shaped, and the small one (pinion) is the small one that is attached to the driveshaft yoke. not trying to talk down, just trying to be very clear. i think u need a recount

i'm not trying to sound like a jack a$$, but didn't you have a thread on finding your ratio a while back where you were told to either look at the numbers on the gear or just spin the drive shaft 1 full turn and see how many times the tire turns. You are making this way to hard.

if you can see the teeth then you can find the ratio stamped ON the ring gear WITHOUT counting

Re: can you tell the gear ratio by the number of teeth on the ring gear?
yes i did for MY rearend i converted to 5 lug disc on the front and have been hunting a rearend, i found one about 1 hr away but id rather find out the ratio without spending 20 bucks in gas getting there, the guy didnt know the ratio but he said there was 43 splines on the big gear (ring gear) im not very smart when it comes to these trucks so i ask you guys, if the numbers dont add up i'll understand i may have to just drive up there and do it myself....

Heres a quick cut and paste from a site I found with truck 12 bolt gears, don't see any 43 tooth sets here.

Re: can you tell the gear ratio by the number of teeth on the ring gear?
I doubt that he was able to count the pinion teeth without removing everything.. as stated though have him looke for a little stamped number on the outer edge of the ring gear. it should say something like 41:11 (41 divided by 11 = 3.72727R) or 3.73 gears.
