Help me out guys? I have a 97 S 10 Blazer with a bad moter. I found a 92 S 10 pick-up 4X4 that I was going to buy for the engin and extra 4X4 parts. Question is can I use the P/U parts on the Blazer they are both 4.3.

Re: S 10 Question
I assume you are dealing with a 4.3L V6. Keep in mind that the 97 and the 92 are completly different trucks, different bodies, different electronic and there are drivetrain differences. The 4x4 stuff may not even fit the 97. Also there may be some differences in the engines. They are both 4.3L's but the 92 will more than likely be a TBI engine and the injection and control systems will be different. Also the heads will be different and the engine may not utilize a balance shaft (for antivibration I'm not 100% sure what years the balance shaft was in the 4.3L). Your 97 is a Vortec engine and will use Vortec V6 heads and will have to be moved to the 92 engine to utilize the 97 fuel injection. On the outside chance the 92 is a first series of Vortec engines (I don't actually think these came out until 94), the these are different from the 96 and later Vortecs. You might be better off finding a 96 or newer S10 Blazer/Pickup/Full Size that utilized the same setup as your 97. Keep in mind that if you
Just so you know, your post will probably be moved to the S10 Forum. So if you can't find it here, look there.

Re: S 10 Question moved from 88-98 forum
92's non-Vortec, '95 is TPI Vortec, and '97 is TBI Vortec. I'm unclear on what years they changed these. I think the TPI was 94-95 but not really sure. You can find a 97 TBI pretty cheap, my old 95 TPI was pretty hard to find so we bought a block and use my TPI setup.

Re: S 10 Question moved from 88-98 forum
From the first the 4.3L was available in the S10 until the end of the first body style (93 trucks and 94 Blazers) the engines were TBI (Throttle Body Injected) using a throttle body mounted on the intake with two injectors mounted in it. I believe these were identified by the Z VIN in the 94 vehicles.
94-95 S series trucks had the first Vortec design using CMFI (Central Multiport Fuel Injection). I'm not sure about the heads, but this system had the intake runners in the middle of the lower intake. This was an option engine in 94. These were identified by the W VIN 96-up were the second design of the Vortec, CSEFI (Central Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection). This is the same as the V8 full size trucks that utilize the "spider" type fuel injector setup and also had the Vortec design heads.

Re: S 10 Question moved from 88-98 forum
IIRC the 92 was the first year for the balance shaft block. they continued this all the way to 08. now, there are 2 different heads on a 4.3. TBI (think electronic carb.) and the first "vortec" (one injector with 6 tubes mounted underneath the aluminum upper intake) use the same bolt pattern with a 12 bolt intake. the later true "vortec" has a different intake and heads. the lower intake has 8 bolts and a plastic upper. it contains a set of 6 individual injectors all with separate tubes.
the heads are interchangable but you have to use the injection that goes with the heads. ie. 12 bolt heads will use TBI or 1st gen Vortec (aluminum upper) while 8 bolt heads will use 2nd gen. Vortec (plastic upper). confused yet? check with www.car-part.com , if you enter your vehicle you will see what applications will fit. I highly suggest against changing powertrain management systems for the average guy. you simply do not want to open that can of worms. |
