Re: wow more truck problems

1 problem at a time:

Transmission (what type as well):
Fluid level, color, smell?
Not up-shifting or down-shifting?
Not changing gears when hot, cold, both?
Does it happen at all times of driving or just when your gunning it?

Engine (Seem to remember 400 sbc):
When you go to turn it off does it at like it is dieseling or does it just sputter then shut-off?
Do you know what your timing is set at?
How do the plugs look?

Answering those questions should give me and the rest of the board a good idea collectively of what might be going on.

Kurt

Re: wow more truck problems

On the trans problem 1. What trans do you have? 2. Can you manually shift the trans with no delay? On the engine issue, it sounds like your timing is off.

Re: wow more truck problems

th350 and i think it is only when it is warm also it wont up or down shift i have to just keep moving the lever around untill it finly shifts and its like when im stopped and i have no idea what my timing is set at also it like sputters for a little bit then shuts off and the plugs are brand new so they should be good and about the smells my engine has always had a burning oil smell but thats just cuz i got a real small valve cover leak lol i think

Re: wow more truck problems

burning oil wouldn;t be the cause of either of the problems you listed.

You need to check the trans fluid for level and color. Sounds like maybe you filter is getting clogged and that's causing it to not shift. I don;t want to say that for sure before you give more info, but it is a possibility.
Does it ever slip?
When you manually shift gears do they engage right off or do they lag?
Does the engine change RPMs dramatically during the shift?

You should probably get the oil leak fixed, but I doubt its the root cause of the issue. I would check your timing first, or find someone to check it for you.
Did the "sputtering" occur after you changed plugs, or ahs it always been an issue?
What did your old plugs look like?

the sputtering just happened randomly and my old plugs looked great and it dosent mess up while im driving even thoe it use too but it stopped doin that...now it only dosent shift when i stop and then change to revers or when im in park and change to drive or reverse

Re: wow more truck problems

describe sputtering. Does it act like it still wants to run or what?

for the tranny i don't know what to tell you, more knowledgeable people will jump in i'm sure. But check the fluid level, color and smell and post up what it is.

Re: wow more truck problems

Sounds like the motor is dieseling. What part number plugs did you use?
I am assuming that it only acts like this after it turns off at operating temp. Run it for 60 seconds after the engine has cooled completely then turn it off. If it doesn't diesel my guess would be you got the wrong plugs in there

Re: wow more truck problems

could the dieseling be cuz my idle is set a little high...i noticed today that my rpm at idle is reading 2000 and is it hard on my engine

Re: wow more truck problems

sounds like the vaccum line to the transimssin fell off.that will mess up the shiftting plus cause the engine to diesel and try to keep running. always look for the simple things first! Jim

Re: wow more truck problems

well i re tuned my idle and my carb and i think the dieseling stopped also i checked the transmission fluid and it was at the right level and looked ok...the only thing im kinda wondering about is that i checked my engine oil while the truck was running and it says it is way way over filled....could this be right cuz it shouldn't be

You should always check your oil when the engine is in the off position. Your truck is fine.

Re: wow more truck problems

chech the vacuum line from the engine to the modulator on the transmission.. i say this because:

1)sudden higher than normal idle would suggest a vacuum leak

2)th350 wont shift right= no vacuum to the modulator...

3)if those 2 things arent connected it will produce a syptom like yours...

see how that works for you.. hope it helps...
