Door locks

Did 60-66 trucks use a seperate key for ignition and door locks or did 1 key do both? I only got 1 key and it won't lock the doors. I can't get the doors to lock from the inside either. (You push the lever the opposite direction than you do to open, right?) The original key for the truck was bent and cracked and the copies I had made may be slightly different but they still work in the ignition.

Re: Door locks

On my '64(-ish) it uses the same key for the ignition and the driver's door but the passenger door is different. I have a feeling it was changed out somewhere along the line. Yes, push down and they should lock.

Hot tip, don't lock the driver's door from the inside and expect to unlock it from the outside with the key. I now have a small piece of rope with a hook on it to put through the top of the window and fish the door lock open from the inside incase it happens again....

Re: Door locks

My 66 panel has two keys. One for driver and back door and one for ignition. My doors lock from the inside by pushing the handle down. Martin64 is right about locking from the inside. I learned that when I was 10 and locked my mom's friends truck. He was MAD! Coat hangers are found wrapped around alot of licence plates just for that problem.

Re: Door locks

The '63's I have had one key that worked for door, ignition, and glove box. My '71 uses one key for doors and ignition. But, the locks get switched out over the years so it's easy to find them in any given configuration.

Re: Door locks

My 1960 only came with 1 key. It fit the ignition, glovebox and driver door. The passenger door had a blank button and could only be locked from the inside.

Re: Door locks

My 65 has the original key and all original locks and ignition.

One key works ignition and locks.

When you lock from the inside by pushing down on the handle it will unlock when you close the door (either side works this way). So if it is working right you can't lock yourself out.

You can lock one door with the handle but the other door would have to be locked with the key from the outside unless you climb out the window, but then the window would be down.

Re: Door locks

I didn't realize the doors would unlock when you close them. I'll have to try locking the passenger side from the inside with the door closed and see if that works. Is there a trick to locking the doors with a key? Mine will go in and turn but I couldn't get it to lock.

Ingition lock, (2) door locks, glovebox lock and (2) keys. P/N 60-022041 $90.00 bucks. One key for all, live a little more simple. just a suggestion thats what I gonna do.

On mine, the passenger door will unlock if you lock it from the inside and close the door. But the drivers door will lock and stay locked when you close the door. That's how I locked myself out. I guess on the way out I pushed the handle down without realizing it. The next time I went to get in it, I turned the key lock to unlock it (like normal) and it didn't unlock. I fished a small piece of rope with a hook through a small gap in the passenger window and pulled it up. When I opened the drivers door from the inside it "clicked" up.

Re: Door locks

I tried for about an hour today to get the doors to lock but couldn't figure it out so I think I will buy a set of locks and just use 2 keys.

Re: Door locks

Creep,

The key door lock function is just a 1/4 turn of the key and it just keeps the button from being pushed in.

Again, If the locks are working right, neither the driver or passenger side will stay locked from pushing the handle down when you close the door.

I don't think my locks are working. I tried locking the passenger door from the inside with the door closed and it still opened from the outside.

Re: Door locks

The ignition tumblers are very prone to wear, and likely any key may work in them, you may even be able to take the key out when it is running, my 62 and 63 both were like that, probably best to get the key kit, and play it safe.

Re: Door locks

For my black 63, I bought a complete kit (both doors, ignition and glove box) ALL same key.

The kit was pretty reasonable.

Re: Door locks

Back in the day when I had a different 66 I also had a 65 GMC that I parted out it was a custom cab and had both door handles with key locks, I didn't have a key for the doors but I removed the buttons and took them to the Chevy dealer and the guy at the parts counter cut me keys off of some numbers he found on the back inside of the button. Maybe you could do that on yours.

Re: Door locks

I finally got the doors to lock from the inside but the won't lock or unlock with the key so I'm gonna order some new locks. I was thinking of getting the full kit but I don't really need the ignition and my glovebox doesn't have a lock. Plus it gives my ignition key a buddy to hang out with
