1986 GMC Pickup
Hi guys,I hope someone can answer these questions for me,I can't seem to find anyone who can.I have a 1986 1500 Sierra GMC Pickup truck,I would like to change it to a Sierra Granda inside and out,I would like to get a new seat, front bumper, dash cover and floor mats for it,Does anyone know where I can go to get these,I am also having problems with the gas mileage,I only get 12 miles to a gallon with it right now,Can I put an overdrive R-4 Transin in it to get better gas mileage? I have a 305-3speed in it already it is all original.

Welcome George. You can get all the parts from a vendor like LMC. There are others too though. Check out this link of my website to see some of these vendors. http://www.shelbournes.net/trucksite/links.htm
As far as the gas mileage problem, you may want to post that in the 73-87 Message Board forum for more response. The 700r4 will help with the gas mileage if you drive alot of highway miles. However, it could also be a carb issue. I wish I could get 12 mpg!

12 mpg for a carb is about right. Only way to improve is with Fuel injection and Over drive.

Edelbrock and other mfg's make kits but they're not cheap. You can look at www.summitracing.com or www.jegs.com or www.edelbrock.com for some of the kits.

This guy is a lot cheaper then that Holly junk and a better system to boot. All stock GM parts with chip taylored to your engine if you can provide him the information.

If you want GM fuel injection TBI and TPI are very affordable. Checkout this TBI installation. He did it under $350 after selling some parts off his carb engine. My choice is TPI. There are plenty of part off Camaros, Firebirds and Corvettes. Checkout www.ebaymotors.com for TPI parts.
I get 12 MPG with the tailgate up. If I remove it or add a tonneau cover I average up to 16-18 MPG!! All with a 305/700R4/3.08 rear and 255/60R15 tires. |

Hey George, you can probably tell by my name what I drive. Anyway, it was originally equipped with a 305 and a 700 r4 trans, and normal mileage for it was about 16 or 17 on a fairly long drive, but I did a check to see how much better the 4th gear was for mileage and it only made a 1 mpg difference. It depends on what gears you have. I had 3.08 and that was to high for the 4 speed trans. Now it has a 455 Olds with the original 700R4 trans, 4.10 gears and still gets around 16 or 17. So I think I would check your carb out first, cause you got to remember the 305 has no power if it's running to slow, and that I can say from experience. Let me know how it turns out.
