Filling Nitrous Tanks

Do any of you guys here fill your own tanks? If so how are you doing it?

My son and I are looking into filling his tanks ourselves to save a little $$. I can get a 35# tank for $78. Not a huge savings, but every little bit helps. We're aware of freezing the empty and filling from a supply tank, and of course the typical filling setup with a pump and all. We're just looking for the most economical way to do it.

Re: Filling Nitrous Tanks

If you can get the large tank without a dip tube you can invert it and you will get more of the nitrous out of the mother bottle. I was told with a pump you can fill a bottle with air but you can not by transfer filling. I ellected to transfer fill mine. You need a good scale also because you can over fill the bottle. If you over fill the bottle the pressusre has no where to go and they pop the safty valve much easier. I only put 9 pounds in a 10 pound bottle and it keeps the bottle pressure more even on a run.

Re: Filling Nitrous Tanks

Thanks for the reply Kevin.
So to put together a transfer setup do you just make up a hose to connect the two cylinders?

Re: Filling Nitrous Tanks

Kevin is spot on. I have gone to bulk gas yards and try to get medical grade. I was told it was cleaner. I also use a in line filter.

I was told I couldn't get medical grade without a license to dispense it.

Re: Filling Nitrous Tanks

My friend has a pump... seems to work fine and i dont have to wait on the bottle to chill down... medical grade has no sulfer in it so it is oderless . thats why they dont want it in our hands... I know that "they" have given us medical grade before but i dont think "they' are supposed to. Might just be a state law though

Re: Filling Nitrous Tanks

The pumps work but they cost way too much and I hear they don't hold up.

Re: Filling Nitrous Tanks

I've been getting screwed on my mother bottles. I got 36lbs out of my last bottle. I was supposed to be getting the "family member hook-up", but I guess not. I'm gonna try a bottle without a siphon tube this time and see how that works out. I also have a NX pump, but my first refill went bad...it had a lot of air in it. So now I freeze fill. I may try messing with the NX pump again, but for now it's a $1400 paperweight that's only been used 1 time.

Re: Filling Nitrous Tanks

Chill your 10 #er down and crack your mother bottle , use a wrench to crack the hose fitting at the 10# bottle to purge air from the line . Weigh it in . If you suspect air in bottle . Invert filled bottle with dip tube in top corner and purge bottle to remove non condesables . A ball valve as mentioned before will save the gas in the line . You should be able to get all but about 6#s out of a full size mother bottle .
