Mounting valves on the tank vs along frame
while getting my fitting list together..i was wondering which way i should run the valves. i have 3/8" valves but my tank has 1/2" ports, and my airline is also 1/2". i kinda want to hide them in the framerail, but would also like to keep them dirt free and mount them on the tank. i plan on putting my tank inside the truck. can i some pics of both set ups and the pros and cons to both? thanks

that does look clean. is there a big chance of getting dirt and debris in them mounting them like that or there is no chance since its all sealed up?

I used to work at a plant where they manufacture the mcdonalds bags and they used the same valves, and they took some serious abuse!!

You want to put your tank inside the truck? You mean inside the cab? If that's the case I would def mount them on the frame some where..my valves are loud as shi!, i couldn't imagine having them in the cab.

I also agree with mycool72 ^^ there is no need to mount anything inside. It will just clutter up the interior and be in the way.
My other train of thought on this subject is that since all of this is part of the suspension, it should be mounted to the chassis. I realize that there are some systems that are intertwined between the chassis and the body, but on a full framed truck I don't think the suspension should be one of them. For example; before I started over on my truck, the tank, rear valves, gas tank, and auxiliary compressor were all mounted in the bed. In order to pull the bed off, I had to disable the whole truck and suspension. The way I have it now, it's just like working on a "stock" pick 'em up truck... with more components and harder than usual to get at fasteners. Last edited by smashingchuck; 10-07-2009 at 03:58 PM. |

that is a good point. mine is a suburban though so it wouldn't really be cluttered. i didn't even think about how loud the valves are. I plan on mounting the tank just behind my rear bench seat..and run the airline through the floor. the main reason I wanted the valves inside is if a valve went out or was sticking, etc. then I could just change it out or fix it without crawling up under the truck

I understand your concern.
You coukld always mount them on a manifold near the rear bumper so they would be easy to get at. To me having to spend a few extra minutes jacking the truck up to work on a valve and having a clean top side (that won't snag a suit case) is worth the extra effort. |

Mounting them on the tanks can be a pain also, if you need to fix any leaks. cause you will have to take it all apart to fix what ever the issue is. Where if you mount them seprate you can get to it easier.Valves can get pretty dirty before any worries about them not working since the air blowing out keeps the only open part of them clean.

well, i think im just gonna go ahead and mount the tank under the frame, and directly connect the valves into the tank. can anyone clarify if i have the right fittings listed. first of all, im using a 5 gallon tank, with 8 1/2" ports. i have 3/8" valves and using 1/2" airline for the bags, 1/8" airline for my gauges.
(4) 1/2" to 3/8" reducing nipples, from the tank to the valve. (4) "T" fittings with gauge nipple. should i get 1/2" "t" or 3/8" "t" fittings? if i get 1/2" t fitting then i need reducers to plug into the 3/8 valve, which would be 2 for each valve, then the male connector for the airline. but if i run 3/8 t fittings then i need a 3/8" male connnector with 1/2" line, which would be 4 of those, i think. man its getting confusing lol. also, im not sure what to get for the other 4 holes in the tank. i know one is for the tank gauge, but i dont see a fitting that goes from 1/8" line to the 1/2" hole in the tank. i know one hole is for the pressure switch, and im using the sqaure d 200psi adj. one, which looks like it might plug in a little different from the other ones. and from the diagram im looking at, the 7th hole would be for the leader hose to the compressor? and i guess the 8th hole would be a drain plug? i know its a lot of info and questions but i really wanna make one good order for my fittings so i dont have to wait up to week for to re order if i have the wrong ones or not enough. thanks in advance.

well, i changed my mind. im gonna keep it clean and mount all the valves outside the truck, along the framerail somewhere, all together. since i havent received a fitting list from someone on here *cough* *cough* (j/k), i tried to make my own. lets see if i have this right. i used the diagram on suicidedoors and heres what i got.
this is the diagram i used to come up with all of this.. [IMG]http://www.*****************/files/how_to/wire-diagrams/8valve.gif[/IMG] from the tank to the lines i need 4 1/2" line to 3/8" connectors, line to valves i also need 4 1/2" line to 3/8" connectors. 4 3/8" T fittings, with 3/8" nipple from valve to T and from T to valve. with 1 more 1/2" line to 3/8" connector to the 3rd spot of the the T. so i need 4 setups like this, so... (8) 1/2" line to 3/8" connector ( 1 from each line to valve, and 1 from "T" to bag airline) (4) 1/2" line to 1/2" connector (from tank to line) (8) 3/8" nipples (2 for each "T" to connect the valves together) (4) 3/8" T fittings (1) leader hose with build in check valve for my airlift 450c now, heres the question. im running a Square D 200 psi adj. switch, i dont know the size for the fitting from the tank to the switch. i have no clue what size it is from the switch, i ordered it from suicide doors. also, i think the guage plugs right into the tank but what fitting is it (i have 1/8" airline for it)? heres my little diagram i made to help me visualize it... i didnt add the leader hose fitting, gauge fitting, pressure switch fitting, and the 8th port fitting because i dont know what they are.
