Show me your 55-59 Suburbans/Panels please

Man its hard to find anything on my 58 GMC Suburban, I'd love to see any pictures of 55-59 Burbs or Panels, rusty or finished. I just bought mine a few months back and I'm probably going to bag it with a cantilever 6 link (for maximum travel) and maybe a mustang II. I'm going to try to keep the perfect patina paint job as intact as possible while completely redoing the chassis and drivetrain. I have a 1966 283 for it that I'd like to convert to a tripower setup. Either that or a 1959 348 (if I can convince my brother in law that he doesn't want his)

That thing is sweet! Love the wheels, love the grill. Is the grill out of a heavy duty version?

Re: Show me your 55-59 Suburbans/Panels please

Well since you asked: I plan to repair the door hingeds, replace all broken glass, install a four link in the rear (the rear was updated by the PO.) install an OG 235 inline 6er, with a three on the tree, wide white wall tires on steel rims and repair the few rusted places. I think I can get that all done in a weekend

Sweet. We'll see who's done first then, All I gotta do is frame, susp, engine, tranny, rust repair... Nice to see another one being done oldschool style! I'm also planning on steel wheels and whitewalls. Also toyed with the 6cyl idea, but probably going for a 50's/60's style V8.

Re: Show me your 55-59 Suburbans/Panels please

The PO removed the 6 from a 1957 chevy and installed a 327. The 6 was fresh with only a few 100 miles on it when it was removed. The body repair is door hinges so the doors don't sag when open, one lower fender corner, and a spot over the pass side tail light that is not a must fix. The engine and trans will be the hard part after that is done I'll replace the glass and do a brake job, they still have pressure after being parked for about 10 yrs. The wiring is going to be a problem since the panel was used as a Moonshine truck and had tanks and valves mounted inside with lots of extra wires. It'll be fun and my kids are looking forward to it. I also have a GMC truck to sell to help fund the "Moonshine Panel". I think its easy to do all of this, I don't envy you having to dop a frame swap.

Oops, I didn't mean I was swapping the frame out. I meant that I'll be restoring the whole chassis..

Re: Show me your 55-59 Suburbans/Panels please

I will paint the frame on mine while I have the clip off and if I swap the rear end and add the four link as I was hoping I will paint the rest of the frame then. I want to drive this panel worse than restore it.

Ask some of these guys. Believe it or not rusted hoods are actually becoming a trend in the Import world.... and apparently you have to do a little more than just leave them out in the rain for a month.

I don't think the die cast model will rust. I know some of the hobby shops around here have paint that is a multi stage process to get the look.

i build model cars and trucks and what i use to get that age look is is rust dust as the call it. it is bassically chalk that you dust, brush or mash into the flat painted car.
