c notch
i am doing a c notch on my 72 c10 longbed, and i am not looking to buy a kit, i was told that a piece of pipe cut in half would work for a notch, or a square piece of metal with the bottom on it cut out will work, whick would do better?

Re: c notch
i used a piece of 5" pipe split in half. if you plan to tow or haul much, you'll want to box that area round the notch as well.

Re: c notch
If anything this set up will make it stronger.
I have seen it done with the C-notch and no boxing plate. I would be concerned there, but I am prone to overdo things.

Re: c notch
The notch will only be as "good",... as the welder, that is doing the work.
Plus the frame is not straight in the area that you are c-notching.

Re: c notch
I'm working on mine right now. I used 4-1/2" OD pipe, 1/4" thick. The ID is 4" so it's a 2" notch.
I would use round over square. Looks cleaner and I just feel like it's stronger since the stress won't be concentrated in any corners. Plus it's less vertical-up welding if you're not comfortable with out-of-position welding. Here's mine. I finished welding it last night but didn't take any pictures of it welded up. I'm going to box the frame here too.

Re: c notch
i had a 72 with a small notch like that for a long time and used it as a tow pic. i notched and boxed like everyone else but i also took a piece of 1x2 quarter in trube and layed it under the top of the frame and plug welded it a few times. made it about 2 foot long, not sure if it really helps alot but always made me feel better

Re: c notch
I'm sure you can do it with the bed on, it just might be a little more tricky. It's nice to have all the room you need.

Re: c notch
since I just did mine about a couple months ago here is what I learned..... a piece of 5" pipe will make your notch big enough for the pumpkin to just rub the bottom of the bed floor..also take the bed off you'll need to weld the inside of the C of the frame when you put the notch in
