700R-4 mated to 205
What would it take to hook a 205 to a 700R-4? I know they never came from the factory like this but somebody has to have done it.
Anybody done this?

ORIONWY2002,
Let's start off with a few questions. What is the 700R4 out of? What was the np205 originally mated to? I used a two wheel drive 700R4 out of a camaro. I replaced the tailshaft with one from Advanced Adapters. This will leave the rear end of the tranny looking exactly like a T350 that was originally mated to a 205. If your transfer case was mated to a t350, then you are all set. Just use the original adapter and go. Shawn aka srhart71 |

any thing that was bolted to a 350th will bolt to a 700r4or vise versa like a np208 will bolt to a 700 and a350

Thanks guys. I found a 700r-4 that already has the output shaft 4 sale on coloradoK5. Any ideas on where to get the TV cable and brackets to hook this up in a 80 K10?

just me talking here,,but there is no way on gods green earth i would put a 7oor4 in front of a 205,,if i were you i would find a 400 or a 350,,the 700's are gunk when it comes to any stress or strain,,they wearout fast,,and are not nearly as strong as its older brothers,,but if you are going to insist on doing this,,and you cant find the right parts,,just get a 2wd 700 r4 and run a divorce mount 205

I went to my local tranny shop and bought a universal fit for the 700R4. I also spent about a half hour with one of their mechanics to make sure I knew how to set it up properly.

thanx mac67 for the info but i disagree. i went tocoloradok5 and asked around and there are guys with big blocks mated to 700r4and 205 that get abused offroad often. a propeerly built 700r4 should hold up to a 205. there are plenty of 700r4 that die in front of a 208 also(i had one) in stock trim. the key is to keep the 700r4 fluid cool.

I agree. It's all in how you build the tranny. I have had two 700R4's behind big blocks. The first was behind a well built 454 in a 68 Camaro. Stock, it lasted about three months. I had a friend who ran GM's Hydromatic plant in Ypsilanti, Mi rebuild it for me and it was still going strong three years later when I sold the car. The second one was in my 71 SWB with a screaming 402 when it was 2wd. I now have the same motor and tranny in the truck still, but I have converted over to 4wd. I will admit that I have a hell of a lot of money in this combo, but I wouldn't go back to a three speed auto unless I went to making an insane amount of torque or horsepower.
To keep things cool, I run the biggest tranny cooler that was available two years ago.(50,000 GVW rated I think) Then I run the fluid back through the cooler in the radiator to warm it back up, before sending it back to the tranny. I have installed a 2 temp guages inline at the exit and entrance of the tranny. The normal temps are around 180-190 exiting and 150-160 entering. I would suggest this setup for all auto's in a 4wd to monitor temps. Orion, Ask MUDDER67 who to contact about four wheelin'. I think he is about 60 miles west/southwest of St. Louis in Owensville. I'll also try to contact a cousin of mine who wheels somewhere around Union and Washington,Mo. |
