Transmission Filter Change
Ok, so i changed the engine oil, but i had no idea when the last tranmission oil change was. I always change the engine and tranny oils with in the first month of ownership. I looked under the truck and looked pretty easy, but about 4 bolts were covered by the transmission crossmember mouunt(unsure about the correct name for this) Long story short i made some modifications to the mount , so i can easyly get to them next time.
other than taking this brackect off, what were my other options? would like to hear what other have done. this is my 87 silverado long bed 700r4 |

Re: Transmission Filter Change
The best advice there is...Put a drain plug kit in the pan while it is apart, so you don't have to deal with the spill mess again.
The factory didn't do it because they want you to have to take the pan off to change the fluid.....hoping that you will do the filter too, since it is already off. As "hobbyists/enthusiasts", we know better than to change the fluid w/o changing the filter, so the drain plug is just a cleaner way to do it. As far as getting the bolts off, Have you tried u-joint style sockets? I actually like the ball-socket type better myself. They are usually sold as "impact" sockets.

Re: Transmission Filter Change
I bought that drain plug Summit sells and put it on my last Blazer. Not sure what I did wrong, but it always had a very slow drip and spotted my driveway up.

Re: Transmission Filter Change
oh yeah, i forgot to mention that i also replaced the yoke(shaft seal) on the transmission becasue that was leaking a little, then it grew. It leaked alover the driveway, even after i put a cardboard underneath it.
Well, the good thing is that after the mod i did to the crossmember, it will be quick and easy next time, but i do custom made crossmember gchemist. I did it the easyway though, with the tranny fluid, i have a mighty vac - MV7400 Fluid Evacuator. Works pretty good. I got after a few changes back beacuse i was tired of getting fluid in my face. |

Re: Transmission Filter Change
I needed that fifteen years ago - I'm convinced transmission fluid kills hair follicles...
