4.8 5.3 ls engine bolts, fasteners, hardware

I have a 5.3 engine and 4l60e transmission out of a 2006 Silverado. Problem is I need some hardware and I really don't know where to buy except from the dealer. Does anybody have information on the bolts which fasten the tranny bell housing to the block, starter bolts to the block and A/C compressor mount bolts.

I don't mind buying from the dealer but was hoping there was a parts diagram or fiche available, just so I could do a little checking on my own.

Re: 4.8 5.3 ls engine bolts, fasteners, hardware

These LS series engines are pretty uniform. Most everything is 10mm X 1.5 I think there is a couple of 12mm X 1.5

I am pretty sure bothe the bellhousing to engine and starter and even the AC brackets are all 10mm X 1.5. If you have one of those cheap digital calipers you can easily figure out the lengths you need.

At least 1 of the bellhousing bolts has some smaller diameter thread sticking out for an additional nut to hold the dipstick tube. (in a bind you might be able to capture it with just the bolt). They use another one or two of those to bolt the fuel line and wiring harness to.

You may want to call a couple of local parts yards and they may sell you everything you need cheap? When I bought my engine from Spaulding auto they included a bag with all the bolts needed.

Re: 4.8 5.3 ls engine bolts, fasteners, hardware

Thanks for the info. Like you are saying it's uniform and I know the lengths and threads I need, such as M10 X 1.5 X certain lengths. It's the material and style that I'm at a loss for. Also like you're saying the threaded stud for the trans dipstick mount.

I was browsing through ls1tech and seen a few post from guys talking about problems with bolt heads being too big for the tranny mounts. Also I would like to install aluminum fasteners like the factory's for the A/C.

I might call some parts yards before heading to the dealer. I'm under the impression these things can cost upwards to $5 a piece.

None of my bolts were aluminum. They are an aluminum looking bolt but all mine are steel. Metric bolts have a different grading than US I think something like 10.9 or?

Re: 4.8 5.3 ls engine bolts, fasteners, hardware

There's a thread on LS1 tech somewhere that has fastener information.

I'm in the same boat, purchased a complete accessory setup from a dude and told him if he did nothing else to make sure he included all the fasteners. Guess what? He "forgot". What a pain to chase these down, and the factory bolts have the splayed heads, something you don't get at the hardware store. They just look right, grade 8 bolts don't in my opinion.

Off to find that thread...

I thought I had that saved somewhere and couldn't find it. Too bad it doesn't say what most of the bolts are for?

Re: 4.8 5.3 ls engine bolts, fasteners, hardware

I did go ahead and pick up starter bolts from the dealer, GM P/N 11610787. Price wasn't too bad... less than $2. He did print me off some specs on the studs for the transmission. Item 6, GM P/N 11519797 is almost $8 a piece and GM uses 6 around the top side. The two on the bottom, GM P/N 11515768, is less than a $1. I don't know I may just just pick up the bolts and use those in place of the studs. I can't find a reasonable price on these fasteners anywhere.

Re: 4.8 5.3 ls engine bolts, fasteners, hardware

I got most of mine from the dealer. I'mwishing I'd went with ARP head bolts, though, just in case the heads ever have to come off.

As for starter bolts, they are specific for the starter. DO NOT USE regular bolts in a starter. They WILL back out. Starter bolts have knurls on the edges to keep them from backing out and to hold the starter in place.

I ordered some bolts, like starter bolts, from Rock Auto. The sell for a fraction of the cost at the dealer and the shipping is FAST! I also needed the lower bellhousing bolts I used the specs, like the ones above, to buy them from my local Ace hardware.

Re: 4.8 5.3 ls engine bolts, fasteners, hardware

Maybe the local dealer here isn't marking up the price on stuff because I bought ALOT of stuff from my local dealership because their prices beat everyone else.

The only regret I have is not going with ARP head bolts. Stock head bolts aren't re-useable, and I think I may have to put new lifters in mine, which means new head bolts and head gaskets again.
