How wide of a wheel

I tried searching and couldnt find any real answers to my questions. this is for the 67-72. How wide of a wheel can I use before I have to modify my rear end? I would like to get as wide of a wheel as I can in the rear with out hitting the box.

thanks in advance

Re: How wide of a wheel

by wheel, I mean the rim size. IM pretty sure Ive got the rubber size down, but have no clue what tire fits on what rim. I would like to run a 20'' rim in the rear and need to figure out how wide of a rim to order. is 10'' just right 12'' too much?

Re: How wide of a wheel

Depending on actual ride height, 10" will fit w/o modifying the tubs; 12" will require mini-tubs & notching out some of the bed floor.

Re: How wide of a wheel

I ran a 10" wide wheel with a 295 wide tire tucking in the rear and it was tight. I think the offset was 5.5 on the wider 12 bolt rear end.

Re: How wide of a wheel

Thanks guys. Im going with a as much drop as I can without cutting the floor. Say I go with a 4/6 drop, will the 10" with 295 rub at at ride height? when you say wider 12 bolt, what years are longer or shorter? the rims are goin on a 68 burb.

Mid-70 & later rear housings (especially factory 5-lug rears) are wider.

Re: How wide of a wheel

If you looking at a custom set of wheels, if you swap in a 67-70 rear end and swap it to 5-lug you can get a wider lip on the rear wheels.

SCOTI's right, I wouldn't run anything wider than a 10" wheel in the rear.

that what I was after, a nice wide lip, I didnt even think that my 68 burb is a 6-lug, just slipped my mind I guess. 10" is what I was after, so thats good news. I'm converting the front to disk and might do the rear as well. To switch the rear to 5-lug, would I just need new axles?

Re: How wide of a wheel

Yep, check in with ECE or CPP and they should hook you up fairly reasonably.

Just remember when you add disc brakes it will widen the front track width by 1.5" (.75" on each side).

Check my build thread. i just did a 20x10 in the rear with a 295/40-20 tire and it rubs ALOT. Ill be raising the rear to about a 6.5" drop to make it driveable. I have the wider rear end with 5.5" backspaced wheel. its the MAXIMUM size.

Rubbing equally on both sides?

Re: How wide of a wheel

I think you went lower than 7" in the rear, those trailing arms are making it really low. after looking at that tho, Idk if thats even low enough for me, I have to figure out how I wanna get lower now

Re: How wide of a wheel

I'm running 295-40-20 on 20x10's with 5" backspacing and no rubbing at all. its real close to the fender though and I'm bagged with a stepnotch. I did remove the factory tubs.
