87 Sierra Classic Quartz clock
The Quartz clock in my '87 stopped working after the battery had been disconnected for a prolonged period. It worked great for 20 years! I haven't taken the dash apart yet to see if I can 'kick start' it. Is it a lost cause? Should I be looking for a replacement?
I thought LMC truck sold them, but they everything but the clock according to my latest catalog. Thanks! 1987SierraClassic -------------------------------- 1987 GMC Seirra Classic 1500 4x4 1989 Chevy Suburban 1500 4x4 2006 2500HD 4x4 8.1L |

Re: 87 Sierra Classic Quartz clock
first thing you can do is to remove the wire harness from it and make sure the contact is good. You can try to make sure there is nothing in the mechanism and rehook it other than that ive never tried to do anything with them.

Re: 87 Sierra Classic Quartz clock
Pull and turn the knob to set the time. One I had would do that now and then. Not sure what the deal was, seems like it got "stuck".

Re: 87 Sierra Classic Quartz clock
Truckandcarshop.com has a repro clock but years 73-79. Try your local GM Dealer first. Also try classicindustries.com. Maybe ebay.

Re: 87 Sierra Classic Quartz clock
On any given day there is a handful or more for sale on eBay. Just search for "chevy truck clock" and it will pull them up. Pretty easy to replace and not worth repairing if it is internally fried. Good luck.

Re: 87 Sierra Classic Quartz clock
This ^^ My last truck did the same thing. For some odd reason I felt like setting the time and it started to work. From what I can tell its designed that way so as not to drain the battery.

Re: 87 Sierra Classic Quartz clock
Thank you all for the info. I'm hoping to replace the dashpad this summer, so when I pull it all apart I'll take the clock out and see what the deal is. It could be corroded inside from sitting in which case I'll try to score another on eBay. I get a lot of parts there!

Re: 87 Sierra Classic Quartz clock
Just found this thread....my 77 has a clock and when you try to change the time it won't change but it jumps tarts for about 30 seconds before quitting again...this tells me it's getting power right? I bought one of the quartz for the later model because I think it looks better with the knob on the 8 o clock position and I was told it would fit fine in my 77. (Is this true?)

Re: 87 Sierra Classic Quartz clock
I got one I took out of my silverado.. I think it worked before I took it out... its been in a bucket and the seconds needle or one of the 2 or 3 is broken. If you want it you can have it... just cover shipping.

Re: 87 Sierra Classic Quartz clock
I know it was a little much. I bought one off of e-bay it worked for a few weeks and stopped. Its a pain in the a%$ to change them out, that is why I had my original one rebuilt. came with a 2 year warranty. AND IT IS STILL WORKING.

Re: 87 Sierra Classic Quartz clock
My 83 clock stopped working last week. I pulled out the knob and reset it and it is still working. I have a time display on the aftermarket Alpine stereo head unit, so I never look at the stock clock. I assume you want it working for factory correct appearance, not function, since a radio will display time also. You can get a modern radio with clock display for less than the cost of a new/rebuilt clock.

Re: 87 Sierra Classic Quartz clock
Yeah, I bought a clock of ebay instead of a tachometer because I think it is just less common...didn't pay much for it but the front has been repainted and it has been oiled....seller said it works but It doesn't really matter to me...it looks really nice and I wont really be using it for time...I have a radio for that.....just wanted to make the dash look nice
