gas tanks and fuel lines
I started cleaning my tanks to paint and reinstall tonight on my 79 stepside. There was a little rust, but looked great, well except for where the bands go around. I took a pick and poked a few holes with no trouble. looks like new tanks. Question 1 where is the best place to by 15 gal tanks. 2nd question. I have 3 lines coming off the sending unit from the tank. I believe one goes to the fuel pump, and one goes the the canisters for emissions what about the third line. I hear I do not need to reinstall the canisters for emisions, so I I gues I need just a 2 line sending unit. so that still leaves the question where doe that other line go to? I looked at my dissasembly pictures and do not have one for the area. thanks for your thoughts

Re: gas tanks and fuel lines
i got good prices at Advanced auto parts for the straps sender and tanks.. others had a different place.. just if you go to the store make sure you get the internet price which is cheaper and they get them in the store in 24 hours

Re: gas tanks and fuel lines
Your third line is for a fuel return from the fuel pump to tanks. It helps cut down on vapor lock.

Re: gas tanks and fuel lines
I looked at my fuel pump and I am pretty sure there are only 2 connections, one from the tank and one to the carb. Am I missing something?

Re: gas tanks and fuel lines
Prong is right. My 78 has the same 3 way sending unit. The big size is main feed line, next size down is return and smallest size is canister. Just got my switching units working correctly after years of searching for the correct 4 in and 2 out with 1 power wire unit.

Re: gas tanks and fuel lines
my switching unit still works, I just ordered new tanks and straps for $120 a side, not bad. but the sending units are $75 each. any recommendations? I am thinking advanced auto for these. I check classicautoparts and they want like 50 for the unit, then 10 for the gasket. I will just shop around

Bought my sending units and fuel tanks from classic industries. I am always pleased with their service.

Re: gas tanks and fuel lines
I checked out the sites you guys told me and I think I can get a little better deal through my parts store locally, he said he would try to cut a deal and now shipping. just more stuff with the tanks going bad I did not plan to spend money on. getting expensive
