This.

I was young (and after reading this you'll wonder how I got old). My friend and I were putting in a shift kit in a TH350 in my '66 C10 in preparation for a cross-country trip. It was winter and we were working outside. As the day ended and the temperature dropped, I decided to stop even though we were close to being done. This is called having "good judgement".

We went inside and had a few. Then my friend talked me into finishing the job now. This is called having "bad judgement".

I went outside in the dark and laid in the snow under the truck to put in the accumulator cover. I couldn't see the O-ring so I had to do it by feel.

Got cleaned up and drove the truck a short way to a party. Everything felt fine.

Left the party in the wee (and cold) hours of the morning. Flying down the highway I see this LARGE rooster-tail of smoke in the rear view. Yup, I sliced the O-ring and now the transmission was relieving itself on my exhaust cross-over.

On the off ramp the truck lost drive. I jumped out and poured my extra quart of ATF in the filler (well most of it anyway) and then drove a few more miles before it crapped out again.

I jogged my frozen butt the last couple of miles, put a few quarts of ATF in a backpack and jogged back. I always remember this incident when I'm tempted to push-on when I really should stop. As to the drinking and wrenching...I solved that by giving up drinking. That also frees-up more cash for parts...

That is very true. Drinking around vehicles is a no-no. The show-off factor when we are sober is bad enough, let alone the show-off factor after we've been drinking.

Re: im drunk

All things in moderation, to much of a good thing is not better. I wait until I'm done working on my truck but sometimes I've had one or two when it's hot in the end it just makes you sweat more and feel like partying. To each his own in the end you may make a stupid mistake you may regret IMHO.---Vernski

Re: im drunk

I always have a few cold ones - when doing clean up.

After the work is done. Wiping tools down, sorting things, throwing junk away and putting chicken feed (absorbent) down on the garage floor is one thing, but I won't even take my ride off its jack stands while drinking beer.

Did I do so when I was a lot younger? Sure. Who didn't. Was I stupidly lucky? Sure was.

Now I use the same rules that I do when fishing on my boat: Hooks, motorized vessel, gasoline, knives, other boaters (most not knowing what they're doing) and the ocean?

Have a beer or two when we get home, while washing the boat down.

I always wait until after 5PM to break into the fridge for a cold one. But again it is always 5PM somewhere.

Re: im drunk

I had to be retrained as I never opened a hood
until I had 2-3 in me.
I used to use a broken down car for an excuse to
Drink. I lied about how long things took just to
be out in my shop, always had friends coming over
to help too. Or I'd lie and say this was broke, "can't go to
the Family Reunion until I fix it so I can get to work
tomorrow" then hang out in my shop....drunk again.
Sneak down to the Legion for a pint or 6 if I found
myself drinking alone too much.

I am in my 5th year sober now, there is no more
available cash but I have 2 sleds, 5 Vintage motor bikes
and a 1965 Chevy Truck instead of a pile of empty
cases waiting for refund. And I did it all without AA's
Rehab or help from the "Big Guy". I guess I have other
stuff too like lots of tools, torches, compressor, sand
blaster, welder, drill press etc....hmmmmm where did all this
stuff come from....

Thanks to Sally for opening my eyes!! I was really drunk only once,
for 32 years straight !!
