Need a horn worth honking
I'm lookin for a horn that isn't so... weak. I come rumbling up in my '64 with my 350 and dual Thrush 2-chamber mufflers and all I can give is a weak grandma car sounding honk Anyone found a horn that can match the 'manliness' of our trucks? Besides air horns...

Re: Need a horn worth honking
The guy that re-wired my '46 claimed that the horns from mid '70's Ford cars are the loudest-for-the-cheapest and I believe it. They're loud and shrill and he paid like $10 for them.

Re: Need a horn worth honking
The first thing that came to mind was an air horn off a garbage truck, they are freaking loud
Second was an AAAWWWUUUGGAAAA horn |

Re: Need a horn worth honking
I'm running 56 Dodge passenger car horns on mine. They have a pleasant tone and are really loud. They're run through a relay so they get full voltage. So far they've been manly enough to scare off deer and errant drivers.

Re: Need a horn worth honking
Dont waste your time with anything from the parts stores....they love to advertise them as having "big rig sound". They are all JUNK. I agree with the older Ford horns and I have had several Cadilacs from the 60's 70's and early 80's that did the job!

Re: Need a horn worth honking
Or just about any 6 volt horn hooked up to 12 volts. You would think it would destroy them, but I had one on a 74 I owned years ago and it did fine for years.

Re: Need a horn worth honking
Ive had some 94-96 Roadmasters and they are seen at the junk yards all the time and man they have a great loud almost train style horn!
Maybe take a jump starter or something to a yard and test horns....?.....

Re: Need a horn worth honking
Your cordless driver battery will do the trick. You just need a couple of jumper wires to make the connection.

Re: Need a horn worth honking
I have Cadillac horns on all my cars.
They sound good and are loud enough make small children cry. There are 4 horns on the good sets. You must run a relay, I use a Fog light kit.

Re: Need a horn worth honking
Ok, this thread is "...A Horn Worth Honking" and we ARE on a web board devoted to old Chevy's; what could be more correct for us?:
See the bottom of this page to order them (no affiliation) http://www.kingofdice.com/horns.asp Last edited by Dan in Pasadena; 02-26-2010 at 12:29 PM. |
