Valves a knocking

My 66 was parked for about a year before I bought it. I got it running but the valves are noisy. Or could be the lifters either way it's noisy. The engine has good oil pressure. Is there a proper way to adjust valves? I was just going to pull the valve cover and try to adjust them while it's running. Might not be the best way.

Knowing what kind of engine might help us to help you.
There is a special tool for valve lash adjustment to do while running. If you have a show truck, you may want to do it with the engine off!
