Worth Buying?
I was thinking of purchasing an old chevy truck for a general purpose work truck. I stumbled on this '66 c20. Everything is original except paint, AC and bed. It was originally a camper. It is very clean. Just wondering what something like this is worth.

If I had something like that I think I would convert it to a car carrier. Looks like a nice truck and with AC. I guess it all depends on what you would want it for.

Wow, Thats pretty spendy for something like that in my opinion but that is totally up to what you want it for. If its something your going to use then you have to weigh what its worth to you and I may be wrong here but I think on these old trucks you have to upgrade the braking systems on them if you want to pull with it. That may very from state to state. I would do some checking if your buying it to pull or haul something. The other thing is if you are buying it to pull something like a 5th Wheel a 454 or a 396 would be nice to have under the hood, dont get me wrong about the 327 but there is nothing like a Big Block for pure grunt pulling power. I think that 8 grand is a solid deal for that truck. If the work was done properly, you are WAY ahead of the game. For a general work truck you could do a lot worse than that one.

$8,000 may indeed be a “fair” price, but it doesn’t seem like a bargain purchase, particularly right now. With the depressed economy many classic cars and trucks are currently on the market at half or less what they were worth 2-3 years ago.
As stated earlier it’s really a matter of what it’s worth to you, and how well it suits your intended usage. A reality check regarding any 60-66 truck is that it is not a 57 Chevy convertible. The finished truck may not be worth what the combined total of all the parts and labor cost to build it. It’s very easy to put $20k into fixing one up, and end up with a truck worth $10,000, or substantially less. Another consideration should be if you intend to keep it forever, or might entertain selling it some day. Popular vehicles generally sell faster and bring more money than less popular models. Compared to a conventional bed, the flatbed is going to appeal to a limited number of potential buyers making it more difficult to sell, at least for a full value price. I’m not familiar with 1 ton components, but I would imagine the brakes and axle parts are going to more expensive. If there is interest in upgrading the brakes to a more modern system, changes may or may not be easy or inexpensive with this chassis. On something like this that has been modified from stock, condition is all important. Make sure to check how the engine and transmission were mounted, the engineering and installation of the air suspension, ask if there were any (or extensive) rust repairs under the fresh paint, etc. I hope the truck and the pricing turns out to be something you feel good about.

Look it over, really close. If it is "as advertised" and the work that has been done is of good quality $8,000 is definately reasonable, IMHO if you want this type of truck. But it is not a good deal if you really just want a pickup. Check out the new paint, looking for bondo where patch panels should have been used like in the cab corners, bottom of the doors and lower front fender by the door. Some filler is to be expected even with replacement panels, but not as a substitute for replacement panels. Check out the cab floor down by the kick panels. Solid steel is what you're after. Look for rust where the front cab support structure attaches to the cab. Talk's cheap.... do a compression check on the motor, it's a pain but the only way to know what you are getting. Check the motor mounts where they attach to the crossmember, bolted or welded? Quality looking or scary? Good looking welds? Check out the frame. Any welding been done on it. Good looking welds? Check out the transmission crossmember. Is it bolted to the frame or welded? Good looking welds? Put it through it's paces electrically, does everything work? Look at the wiring under the hood and under the dash. Is it in good shape or butchered? Is the air suspension original, has any of it been replaced? When you are paying this much for a truck it shouldn't need everything re-done. But then again, unless your one lucky guy, it won't likely be a full restoration either. Have the wheels been up graded to 16"? If they are still 16.5 two piece rims...the replacement tires will be $$$ and NO tire shop will be willing to mount/dismount them.
That is a very cool looking truck though. I would drive it. |

A bit pricey, but if everything checks out and it is "as advertised", I would purchase the truck. The test drive was supposed to happen a few weeks ago, so I wonder what became of it.
