oil change

ive got a 454 with about 1200 miles on it. ive been told to change the oil after sitting all winter. people have told me to put 20 50 in the motor and keep it there. any suggestions as to why, and is it good advise? thanks for the help.

For future reference, in regards to storing a vehicle and changing the oil, it is better to change it "before" it sits all winter.

Unless you know for sure the condition of the oil, or do a used oil analysis (UOA), it is a good idea to change the oil. Today's oils have additive packages and different levels of total base number (TBN) that resist corrosion. These packages degrade over time and use. 20w50 is a pretty heavy oil, I generally use a non-emissions type of oil in the straight 40w range in my hot rods, etc. since I'm in the southwest - I tend to recommend 10w40 or 10w30 to my friends and customers in the colder climates. I use a Brad Penn in my non-emissions-equipped vehicles due to the higher levels of zinc and phosphorus.
