Re: 63 frame

Morton, I wish I could help you but all my knowledge is with 64-66. Good luck with whatever you decide to do with the frame.

Re: 63 frame

63 to 72 frames are interchangable i put one of my 63 short beds on a 70 4x4 frame
and i am in the prosses of putting my other 63 on a 68 frame and the 68 on the 63 frame (then sell the 68 for parts) in 67 power steering was a option and the frame was made for the power steering box it is a bolt on swap for power steering using 71 to 87 steering parts thats why i am going to the 67 to 72 frames for my 63's

the rear cab mounts on the frame are different but they can be changed back and forth but you would need to drill new holes
and the crossmember for the radiator is different the radiator for 63 to 66 mounts to the crossmemer and 67 to 72 mounts in the core support and i think the front of the frame where the bumper mounts might be different but i can't remeber on that as i put a winch bumper on my 4x4

but as far as 63 to 66 they are a direct swap

60 to 62 had torsion bars and a different frame the front cab mounts are different on the cab but you can buy the parts to put the 63 and up cab mounts on a 60 to 62 cab

i have been building 60 to 72 chevys for 17 years now and have owned at least 50 if not more my first truck was my 4x4 63 when i was 15 i have swapped it from a 2 wheel drive long bed to a 2 wheel drive short bed then to a 4x4 short bed

i hope this helps a little

Re: 63 frame

The first year for the integral power steering box was 1969. Prior to that, the power steering that was available was a power assist style. The '67 & '68 frames had the correct bolt pattern for the '69-'87 power steering boxes, but the dimple in the frame isn't deep enough without adding a .250" spacer to all 4 mounting points of the steering box.

And yes the front frame horns are different between the '63-'66's and the '67-'72's

Re: 63 frame

I have been searching and I think this answers my question.

Can I swap my 62 frame for a 63+ frame by switching out the cab mounts? I know the motor mounts would be different and such but I would be using a PB dropmember up front and some PB pieces out back and a full airbag suspension anyways so my major concern is mounting the body. What will and won't work with minor modding? It seems it would be easier to get a newer frame than to work with the X style 60-62 frame.

Re: 63 frame

All you need to do to mount a '60-'62 cab onto a '63-'72 frame is drill new holes in the cab floor for the front cab mounts. The contour of the body mount on the bottom of the floor is the same. If you feel so inclined you can also transfer the recess for the cab mount bolt to the new location, so your mount bolt is flush with the floor.

Re: 63 frame

I have to replace my cab supports anyways, I have a set of 62 replacements sitting in the garage at home. Would it be better to get some 63 cab supports?

Re: 63 frame

IMO it wouldn't make much difference. You'll still have to drill a new hole in the floor for the front mount bolt. Since you already have the '62 replacement cab supports, I would just keep them and put them on. Then just drill your holes that you need and plug the other holes.
