3 doors or 4?
I really like the uniqueness of the three doors on a burb. I do understand why a few people have converted theirs to four door though. Sure makes it easier for access, and for those that know these trucks its pretty cool to see them with the extra door and realize all the work it was to convert. But the average person wouldn't have a clue they didn't come with four from the factory.
So Im just curious, if someone made a kit to easily convert your burb to four door would you? Personally I wouldn't do it, I like the fact that it is unique. As far as I know there isn't anyone that has a kit or is even planning a kit to do this. Just tossing this out there to get peoples thoughts. |

3 for me! The driver side looks so much better IMO. Its really not all that inconvenient as my kids are the main passengers. They are old enough to buckle themselves and dont complain much.

If there was an "easy" installation kit, I would probably convert it to a 4th door. With that being said, I'm very happy with my 3 Door....

It might be a more popular conversion if someone had one of these Suburbans in a right hand drive country. That way their passengers could unload safely without stepping into traffic. I've picked up Australians and Brits from the airport in a van who defaulted to the driver's side of the vehicle looking for a non-existent door.
As it is, the 3 door suburban here in the States gets your passengers out on the 'safe' side. Plus, like you said, it's a lot of work. I prefer to confuse passengers who've never ridden in a Suburban of this vintage.

Having a newer '03 suburban and a 1 year old, when I get an old suburban I would definatly prefer a 4 door, however I think the cost would out weigh the benefit.

This is a tough one.... I do like the 4 door versions that some of the folks have done and even more so respect the amount of work gone into the conversion.
That being said I really like my 3 door burb as well.. I think I would prefer to keep mine the way it is...... for now |

I agree with Mark, I do like the uniqueness of the 3 door, I can usually catch one on my kids friends off guard, telling them to get in the back on the drivers side ... and infact I have been concidering shaving and smoothing the door handle on the 3rd door and adding an internal release ... just to add more confusion to it.
But I myself, see nothing "EASY" about the conversion and a kit would have to be something.

I am a firm believer that if you own it you should do what you want with it. For me, the reason I have this vintage burb (67-72) is because of the uniqueness of the 3rd door. I find it that there are quite a few people that don't know these things came from the factory without a drivers side rear door and obviously that is a conversation piece. On the other hand it's a great conversation piece with the "experts" if you were to convert because people who know these trucks can appreciate the work it took.
For me I am keeping the 3rd door. Since my burb is so unmolested I am going to leave it like it is and drive it like I stole it... :-) If I had an additional burb that I was going to do a complete restore on, then I would consider it. Steve

I wouldn't change my '72 to a 4 door...I like the classic style of the 3 and it is an interesting talking point. However, my crewcab is a cutdown suburban and I wish it were a 4 door. I vaguely remember Kevin(Rokcrln) talking about making a 4th door kit (I think)...but I couldn't find any info on it. I even went to his website but there was no mention.
BTW, the rear AC hoses come up through the floor of the "4th door", into the C pillar and then behind the rear panel to the rear pillar and up to the roof. Obviously, you'd have to reroute them.

Most of the "car people" that I talk to have absolutely no idea what i'm talking about when I tell them I have a three-door suburban and then think i'm joking when i explain. A lot of these folks think that these trucks were available in both two and four door. I'm guessing that it's because you dont see both sides at the same time.
The three-doors are the source of these trucks' identity and coolness... Why would I want to change that? Two doors have always been the standard of coolness, but if you want that, you buy pre-67 or post-72 if you want four doors. |

This is the same kind of question as "restore or rod" the answers can go on forever without one being right or wrong. Especially when it comes to 67-72 Suburbans. There will always be people who know and people who don't know that the 67-72 Suburbans were the first GM trucks actually named Suburbans and originally came with 3 doors. The same argument can be made for many other vehicles as well. Like the 56 Ford truck. They look good worked over and stock. But how many of us can spot EVERY mod made to a custom 56? The same type of question can be asked about lift it or drop it. Now I am normally a lifted-4x4-type-hate-lowered-trucks guy. But these Suburbans look oh-so-good down on the ground! I would say better than lifted! Now when it comes to things like the interior updated or left "stock" I have to say I have never seen an interior that I liked that was not stock. So 3 doors, original, unique, easy, fun, and good looking... 4 doors, respect worthy, convienient, good looking. Either way these trucks are 100% BAD A$$!!!!!

but to answer your question, no 4th door here! if the kids wanna complain about getting in, we got an obs suburban and a nbs tahoe they can sit in.

I gotta admit, with 2 kids and constantly needing in the back part of the burb, I would definitely be all about a four door kit. However I don't see how a kit could really be all that 'easy'. I have seen what rockcrwln and other members have gone through to get that 4 th door. But if anyone wants to make one and send it to me for a test fit and honest evaluation and development feedback, let me know and I will be the tester.

3 doors are the way to go. It is the coolest feature on the truck. I just dig how from the inside, minus the door handle, that it looks like a door is supposed to be there. And the "long" side is just so clean without the door.
Now........ I wanna suicide my third door, so I can open-up that whole side and blast the tunes when we are at a gathering |

Three doors are cool because it allows for those Craigslist, ebay,etc listings by boneheads who actually think they have one of the only 3 door burbs ever made. It may be rusty, but the 3 door "option" makes it worth 10 grand. I enjoy it anyway.
Also, 3 doors make for some great parking lot conversation with unsuspecting people. You come out of the store and someone is standing there looking at your truck. If they ask about the missing door, you can tell them it was built on a Friday afternoon, during a UAW strike (stupid replacement workers!), specially made for a third world dictator, etc. Lots of ways you can go with it. Try it sometime. |

I've thought long and hard about ponying up and getting that 4th door installed, but can't justify the cost right now. Hopefully in the next few years though.........
