Saddle tanks

I just bought my 71GMC 3/4 ton 4x4. It had saddle tanks, as most seem to have. Did all long bed trucks have them? I pulled mine out to get the truck weighed for DMV and I don't think that I am going to reinstall them. I think I'm going to swap to a blazer tank, and carry gas cans on long trips. Anyone out there want some saddle tanks cheep (free). Anyways, just about every long bed truck I've seen has them, and I was wondering how many do.

Thanks,

It was a cold night last night. Se the 1/2" of frozen sleet on the tanks. And to think I get to go out into the cold today and change the power steering pump in my baby sisters Fo*d Taurus.

My 71 3/4 Suburban 2wd has a saddle tank on the pass side, and you fill it in the wheel well opening. That is in addition to the regular rear tank, and there is a fuel switching valve on the floor.
I will probally take it out it hangs 1" below the body and I don't like the way that looks.

Both of mine had em, be real careful welding up the holes for the doors, it's real easy to warp the sheet metal. Trust me on this.

mine used to have them when it goes back together its not gonna have them, i have seen a number of long beds without them, both of mine had huge rust holes in the tops, so im guessin they were there for a while, haha.

My old Longhorn had one...ripped it out before it was ever on the road.
most were dealer installed, some wer factory options. your glove box door will tell you if it is stock.

When I was in California in the fall I noticed that almost every 67-72 I saw had saddle tanks. It must be a thing out there because everywhere else I have been they dont seem to be that common.

I think I will keep mine though, its great when gas prices are low and I can "stock up" :p
