driveshaft question: length and interchange

I was wondering about 73-87 2wd short bed driveshaft lengths and interchange. I had a 76 with a 3 on the tree saginaw, and it had a 1 piece longer DS that would be the correct length for a 2wd short tail th350 since they ended up being same overall length between the th350 shorty and the 3 on the tree saginaw.

Well would the end of the ds slip yoke be the same?

What other DS's would work? Would the 2wd sm465 work?

Kinda wondering what driveshaft I could look for from a stock truck as a direct bolt in for a short tail th350.

My dad has an 84 with a long tail th350, and I'm thinking it might be easier to find a short tail th350 and longer DS. Also if someone who has a 3 on the tree saginaw 2wd swb, or a short tail th350 in the swb 2wd could you get me a measurement?

Re: driveshaft question: length and interchange

I changed my 80 swb truck that had a 6 with 3 on the tree to a 350 with a turbo 350 with a short tail. and the dr.shaft fit fine.I think there is 3 tail lenght lenghts 3-6- and 9 I,m not sure,I,m sure someone will correct it.I find more short tailshaft trannys then long ones.Mine came from a midsize 305 car

Re: driveshaft question: length and interchange

the th350 had 3 a 6 inch (short tail) 9 inch long tail as I have ad a 12 inch.

As for the transmission after searching I guess I can only use a 3 speed truck driveshaft for a short tail th350 unless I find one somebody had a th350 short tail in it.

The 4 speed isn't an optin since it's not slip yoke on the back of it, unless they have a car 4 speed in it with s lip yoke.

The th400's are longer so it's ds might be the same as what I got or a little longer but not long enough for a short tail 350. 700r4 would be too long too.

So only thing stock i can find that work is the 3 speed saginaw ds in a 2wd short bed truck. The yoke are all pretty much 27 except for the th400 and I think 4l80 were 32 spline.

Re: driveshaft question: length and interchange

well I gotta find the longer driveshaft, the trans we got ended up being a short tail, even though he said it was long tail, came home and checked, it aint, but it did look longer though.

Re: driveshaft question: length and interchange

or seems like they have 27 spline output slip yokes that are like 8 inches long, one of them might work and take up the difference, just hate the price tag of like $80 shipped.
