so she's back sitting in the garage again.

now that i have my truck back on the road, i have found a new problem. my poor little monojet is leaking from the front and back. fuel just trickling out. its not coming from a line that can be tightened or anything. i had two other guys take a look at it for me ,that also own 73-87 chevy trucks, and both say its gonna need a rebuild or replace it. i'm not fluent in carbs so rebuilding doesn't seem to be an option for me. and it looks like a new monojet is around $250 dollars so that isn't looking good for me either. spending that much i might as well convert to a fuel injection setup. so my question is: if i upgrade to fuel injection how much do i gain in mileage/hp as compared to buying a new 'old' monojet? cost for cost

I am by no means mechanically inclined. I've never torn in to an engine, never done much besides swap a radiator or condenser and put a starter on. But, back in the late 80's I did rebuild a quadrajunk, and it was not all that hard. All in all though, to be honest, even after rebuilding it I ended up with a new edelbrock.

Can you really get close to a fuel injection setup for $250? I know to go to a TBI you're looking at wiring and computer, plus the in tank fuel pump setup. Of course that is a factory TBI setup, not familiar with aftermarket FI setups.

me personalty i would get a new carb for it o try to have that one rebuilt. but if u go to tbi u basically better of getting a donor truck if u go that rout. hope this helps

carb rebuild kits are cheap, and a monojet is very easy to do, not many parts. I would take on the task of rebuilding it before buying another or doing something as serious as an efi swap. Biggest thing is to have a book on the carb, or pictures of it.

If the body of the carb is still in good shape, just rebuild it. You don't need to know anything about carbs, you just need to know how to pay attention to what you are doing. Pretty simple.

sounds like the throttle plate wore out,replace it all,carb kits i've done don't have this part,would still leak,you might just flood engine if lucky.Or worse FIRE

That's usually how I gauge my successes and failures. Though projects with peices left over usually tend to turn out better in the long run.

How would a worn out throttle plate cause the carb to just start leaking from everywhere?

i had gas drip out all around the post coming threw,pile up in the intake pockets.
I was in getting exhaust put on ,(muffler shop)guy see's that says gotta fix that,
it's the throttle plate wore out from spring/pedal tension.
I ordered carb from my parts guy,got it on in the parking lot,running atleast,
back in,pipes on,when set up ran great.
Before this ,the carb would bog/smell it/and i did carb kit .i had not seen it happen before,but someone else must have

I used to use that system until the stuff I buy started to COME with extra parts... now I have no clue if I did good or not...

Oh yeah that makes sense. I've seen that happen to alot of q-jets. I do believe there is a company that makes a kit to repair that problem.
