need help! Rear wheel bearings / hub removal
I have my rear axle out and on jack stands the drums are off and i want to replace the wheel bearings, but i can't figure out how to remove the hub. Do so i slide the whole thing out by unbolting something in the pumpkin ? Not sure on this one.
Other reason for doing this is removal of the "dust shield" and cleaning it up so i can paint it up. While im at it i want to replace the shoes, drums , springs, wheel cylinders and bearings and seal. Should tell you what im working on. I have a 1968 chevy 2wd 3 speed , not sure on what kind of rear axle, but for sure original. |

Prolly a 12 bolt... You have to take the cover off the diff and take the "C" clips off the end of the axles. Then the will axle will just slide out. However to pull the bearings out of the end of the axle tube you need a special tool... basically a slide hammer.

some one else was talking about the C clips ?? Not sure what they look like I looked and all i see are Two bolts on each side that look like they are holding some things like a Piston rod cap. Never done this before so im not down the lingo just yet.

Re: need help! Rear wheel bearings / hub removal
pull the diff cover and you will see a bolt on the pinion as I remember its 7/16 take it out & push the axles in and the c clips will come out / then the axles will pull out. when I did my bearings& seals I used a large pry bar 20" sorry,(not a pro) worked great for me. best of luck to you, Pat

Or buy a service manual... it will walk you through it step by step...
