Bed covering options Question (on the cheap)

I have a 66 short bed stepside but I don't have the cross sills or a wood bed or anything and am wondering what are some cheap decent looking options I have to make for a functional bed. Do I need 5 Cross sills or can I get away with 3? I want a bedliner finish so could I use a 1/2" plywood sheet as bedwood & just roll on bedliner it?

This was about $100 but you will need the bottom cross braces, you need them to mount the bed anyway, you can use 1/2 inch tubing to make new ones.
The wood is 3/4 inch material and just buy a box of carriage bolts abd nuts at Ace, it will be cheaper than buying the exact # you need.

That looks great, just what I want to do. Can you tell me more about this Tubing? 1/2 in U shaped tubing? Does it bolt direct to the frame in a few places?

I like the idea of a fleet box but I went through a lot to get this bed and I already lined the wheel wells and started stripping it for paint so I don't want to part with it.

If you're lacking some of the bed cross sills you can buy new ones fron Mar-K for a reasonable price. Then everything will just bolt together. They can be found here in the Vendor Marketplace or on their website.
